Hi I made a mistake today and accidently cut too close to the quick. I feel so bad. I have had my guinea pigs a year now and just cant cut nails! I have tried small animal nail clippers and human clippers and I swear I will NEVER cut again with these. The one piggy who sits so still for me and cooperates and i have so much trouble cutting her nails as they are black and they quickly turn under. My other piggy who moves around alot has clear nails so she is easier but I have completely lost my confidence in doing this chore. If I cant find another way to do it I will have to take them to the vets to get it done.

So any way I have bought a pet nail grinder. Does anyone use one of these and how successful is it, any hints or advise. Its my only hope to do it at home.

Sorry your confidence has been knocked. I admit I have cut their quick at least twice. 3/4 of my piggies have black nails 😭 I now just trim off a little at a time. I think the more you cut the more it recedes, though I’m not sure how quickly that happens.

I’ve never used a grinder and just use the pet clippers (used to use our nail cutter but I don’t think the husband was best pleased). I would say give it another try and trim off a little. I also found that using my finger as a ‘guide’ stops me cutting off too much.
