Picked this up today to try for hot days... will make a fleece cover for it..anyone tried one for guinea pigs ? They probably won't sit on it...... 20170528_114101.webp

Good idea. I think a lot of people try snugglesafe pads ? i'm not sure of the proper name
Also ice pack or frozen water bottles in socks etc, so along the same idea.

The difficult thing is definitely getting them to go near it,lol

With your mat, is it always "ready to go" or do you need to freeze it?

Ready to go apparently.. Not opened it yet but one was open in the shop so I had a feel and it was cool... I think with the fleece cover they won't spot it but will feel the benefit when it's hot!

I'm not sure it'll work with a fleece cover on it. I think they need to be touching the plastic. Have you thought about using ceramic tiles? For my outdoor bunnies, I used to keep 3 or 4 very cheap ceramic tiles in the freezer (the ones that are about 30cm square) and then put them in the shed on a rotational basis. My bunnies and piggies would never go near an Ice Pod (perhaps because they're slightly domed?) but liked a cold ceramic tile. I just went to B&Q and bought the cheap ones that had a broken corner or were only half a packet etc. Only cost me a few £s and were very effective. Fortunately, the piggies live indoors and I have air-con installed so they're very lucky little people when it's hot.

hmmmmm might return it then... i do have an old tile in their cage at the moment.. to be fair they are indoors and i don't like it hot so i try to keep it cool and we do have an air con unit built into the front room so... might return it and save the money... mind you my feet are really hot so i might keep it for under my desk when i am sat working :lol!:

I've got one of those from B&M for me. It does say on the pack for animal use only, but I've had it a year with no ill effect. Having terrible night sweats due to my age, it's great to be able to put a knee on it, works really well. I think you do have to be in contact with the plastic for it to work, I did think about getting the piggies one but was worried about them eating it.

That's what I thought.. they would surely nibble at it.... but I guess it won't work if I cover it with fleece like I planned.. I might try it inside my pillow case to keep my head cool !

Good idea to try it in a pillowcase yourself and see if it works, I've got a feeling I did try it with a cover and it didn't work but my memory is defective these days.

ive used these, they just sit on them as it is cool, but not cold, just if they wee on them it is difficult to get stain removed, ive now got scratch and newton ice pod.place in freezer and then place under fleece,

I put a cover over them when they started nibbling, which kinda defeated the object and I think for it to really work they need to be laying down on them fully to get the heat from their bodies to activate the pad. I bought 2 Scratch & Newton ones which weren't cheap and I did try very hard with them but they did chew through it, I even put the wood tunnel over the edges to stop them biting it but that didn't work either. The crystallised stuff came out...clearly not a good idea.

Please use with caution or monitor daily.
I'm sure they would work really well for humans actually.
Anyone got piles? :lol!:

I saw one of these in a store I was in a few weeks back and it was oozing gel like stuff, or whatever it is they put inside them. It was only a display mind you but with piggies nails being so sharp I would be concerned they would scratch a hole in it and ingest the gel (seriously though my Patchy would totally do this, she doesn't care what she puts in her mouth so I have to be careful about everything I put in their cage lol).

I am taking it back for a refund.... I can buy 4 bags of hay with the refund
