Hi all!

My piggy Coffee is a 1 year boy who has recently had an issue with his teeth for 4 month- they (front and back teeth) became long and that made him difficult to eat. And made him keep losing weight (now Coffee is 440g, his piggy friend is 900g).

He eat exactly the same foods with his piggy friend, a lot of hay and no more than 5g nuggets and a little bit fresh veggies only feed by hand. I also prepared chewable apple tree sticks and some toys, he wasn't very intereste. But Coffee looks like he can't figure out how to use his teeth properly.

I already bring him to vet for 3 times in this season, each time dentist treatment spend nearly 200 pounds for teeth Grinding (front and back) and Anesthesia. This is a huge pressure on me both financially and psychologically. And I'm not sure let him anesthesia every a couple of months is a good idea.

He is a very good piggy, always come and cuddly me. And friendly to all the people, not afraid of strangers. I don't want to give up on him !!

So the question is - what are my next steps? Is there any cheaper veterinary in london if I have to bring him to treat every month.

Is this tooth going to be an ongoing issue or what else needs doing to it?!

Also I searched the forums and found out that he might be a victim of the Dalmatian gene, maybe that's why he hasn't been able to get healthy teeth. :( What I can do to help him?

I’m sorry to hear this. All you can do is stay in contact with the vet to work out whether his dental issues can be fixed.
If it is a genetic issue then it may not be able to be fixed completely.

If he is losing weight, are you syringe feeding him to stop weight loss?

You will be highly unlikely to be able to insure him for an existing medical condition.
There is only one insurer is piggies in the UK - Exotic Direct. The excesses and restrictions can make it not worth having, which is why most of us don’t insure and instead having savings, a ‘vet fund’.

Thank you for your reply. I used syringe some time, but it seem speed up dental problems, made him chew less:( But I keep prepare syringe as emergency.

Not chewing hay or grass will cause the teeth to not wear down properly but you need to be weighing him every day to monitor independent hay intake. If he is not maintaining his weight each day on his own then he isn’t eating enough and so he would need to be fed by you.

Is he still losing weight?

In fact, the weight change is more like a cycle: the teeth are at the right length after the operation, and the weight increases after eating normally; after a period of time, the teeth are too long and then lose weight
