Hi again all!
Pepper had an awful uri from may to august, came off antibiotics after the vet told us her lungs were completely clear. She still had a little bit of snot from her nose sometimes, but that went away with time. She seemed to have completely recovered by mid september. Changing to Haybox hay also helped significantly. However last Wednesday she had sort of crackly breathing for about an hour, coughed, and then it went away. Since then she has been fine, however, it’s after eating she’ll have slightly audible breathing and then go back to normal. In july she was around 1040g, and today she weighed in at 1196g, so her appetite isn’t affected. She does seem to cough rather a lot at night, presumably while either eating hay or sleeping. By a lot i mean about 3 times per night. Her eyes are normal and she’s acting normal. However, i had a good look at her nose and on one side she seems to have some snot on the inside. I honestly can only describe it as looking like human snot. They’re bedded on newspaper( i change the toilet areas daily) and tons of hay. She drinks a lot of water. My other guinea pig is 6.5 years old and does have bladder issues, but other than that she is fine and showing no respiratory symptoms. When i pick pepper up and listen to her breathing there is a very very slight whistle, but to be honest she’s always had this. I can’t hear anything on her chest but i might be wrong? I’m so paranoid here! We went to the vet 8 times from May to July, and 3 of those times the vet assured us her lungs were clear. I’m not sure whether this is allergies or the start of a new infection or what? It’s the nose that really worries me!

honestly if anyone could help me at all with this it would be so helpful- i’m so paranoid about the prospect of another uri and more months of worrying they’re going to die on me 😞

Hi!

Have your tried to see whether a bowl of steaming water next to the cage does help to ease her breathing? If yes, a humidifier in the room, now that it is colder and heating is on more, drying up the air, may help.

If that doesn't help, then it would be best to contact the vet if you think that there is a noticeable deterioration. It doesn't sound any more than her nostrils being being mildly affected?

Thank you for the reply! i have tried a bowl of steaming water and it didn’t seem to do much, as her breathing is fine sometimes anyway. Is it possible that the snot in her nose is caused by allergies or a sensitivity or is it definitely likely to be an infection? I’m self-isolating at the moment as my mother has the virus but i can try and see what i can do via the vet.

I’ve also noticed she drinks lots and lots of water. i’d say about 100ml per day? She’s always been a big drinking but in the past month she’s started drinking more. Eats lots and is otherwise actually normally. Her eyes are slightly watery but to me they usually are?

It is impossible for us to tell you what is causing your problems. If you want to answer that question, then a nasal swab and laboratory test to check for the presence of respiratory bacteria and which antibiotic they respond to if there are bacteria would be the best way forward - unfortunately, it is not cheap.

A sudden protracted marked increase of drinking that cannot be tied to a change in weather or the onset of indoors heating etc. can be a sign of kidney problems plus some more rarer issues. It is usually not related to a respiratory issue.
