Hi all

I am new to the group and have two 9 month old boars ( Percy and Muffin)I noticed last Friday that Percy’s wee was a different colour to before ( I always do the cleaning so it’s something that stood out) I took him to the vet who have him an antibiotic shot and a course of Metacam. He mentioned cystitis. Percy is not in pain and is his normal chirpy popcorning self. I am taking him for a follow up tomorrow as it is still orange. I know there wee oxidises but it comes out orange. I am reluctant for him to have an x ray as it would mean sedation and an all dayer at the vets. Do you think I am over reacting? Thank you!

Hello and welcome to the forum. I have a Percy too (and Pepper).

I would always be guided by the vets. Hope he’s soon on the mend. 😃

How sure are you it’s coming out orange? One of my boars went through a super oxidation phase (yay for porphyrins!) and I went through the same panic. In my experience, it turns orange very quickly, so if you’re not actively seeing it come out of him, it may be hard to judge.

Hello and welcome to the forum
Percy is such a handsome boy, I hope he’s ok and it’s just oxidisation x

Yes I think you are right it just seems to be oxidising so much faster- I panicked because it’s not been so dark before. Can it vary due to porphyrins ( goes to Google…..) x

Yes, it can definitely vary! Our one boy who had this issue had orange pee randomly after we had him for a few months. This continued for probably two months and then randomly stopped. Piggies are strange lil creatures!

Obviously, ruling out any medical reasons is still really important. But it sounds like you’ve done that!

Yes I think it’s the randomness of it that panicked me! It’s reassuring to hear that you have had a similar experience! Crazy how much we worry about them!

Hi!

Urinary tract infections and cystitis usually start with intensely red urine (the porphyrines); this doesn't look too worrying to me.

Veg can also cause coloured urine on occasion, and it is not necessarily carrots.
