....how many of layers of fleece do you put down? and do you put anything other than newspaper underneath?

i am hoping to build my piggies a bigger cage soon and part of it will be vetbed but was going to put fleece in the other parts.

thanks :)p

I use two or three layers of towels and one layer fleece. You need something absorbant underneath the fleece, newspaper will just get wet and soggy.

I've only just started using fleece, but I use one layer with 2-3 layers of towels underneath, which works well.

ok, thanks :)p so the towels and fleece get changed everyday? or just the towels and the fleece every other day or so? :)p

I haven't got piggies anymore :( but when I did I used thick bath towel's on top of the newspaper then fleece on top of that, worked a treat.

A friend used to use puppy pee pads, towels then fleece I was never comfortable with that idea incase the girls got under the towels and ingested the pee pads!

I have fleece, towel, newspapers, vinyl.... every 3-4 days here. Spot clean everyday... I do spot clean every second day but I only have one piggy!

I usually do a whole cage cleanout about every 5 days - 1 week maximum. Depends on how many pigs you have and how big your cage is! Just trial and error I guess untill you find something that works for you x

edited to add - and spot clean everyday - i.e - hoovering up poops

i'm using vetbed now, one off ebay. the cage is the trixie 150 at the moment, hopefully building them a 5 x 3 c&c cage soon though.

at the moment, a 1/4 of the cage has newspaper, then megazorb, then hay...and the other 3/4 of the cage is vetbed.

i change all the paper underneath and wash the vetbed every other day...and the hay area gets changed daily.

so does the fleece absorb the wee then? i used some fleece when i first got them and the wee just seemed to sit on top of the fleece. :{

also, if the towels and fleece aren't changed daily, do they smell? or would just changing the hay area daily be ok, as well as spot cleaning daily, and then a full clean out every other day or so?

I've only had one guinea pig in quite a large (3x5 C&C) cage and changed the fleece once a week (though I clean up poo every day), and changed any dirty towels at that point too. (She only goes to the toilet in two or three small areas so most of the towels stayed completely clean and dry and didn't need changing.) My "herd" has just increased in number though so I expect to be cleaning more regularly from now on! It really will depend on the size of the cage and the number of piggies, I know that some people need to do a complete clean out every 2-3 days.

I put some news paper on the bottom, then fold my fleece in half with paper inside that too. Although I can obv. only do that with my big fleeces, I should get some old towels too.

my cage stayed very clean when i just had chesney...but maisie wee's for england! and sits in her pee aswell! rolleyes so i change it all everyday! i have to.

just wanted something that could mean i could change it all every two days or so and not smell!

i just have the two of them and they only seem to wee in one place - the hay...where they also sleep!....so in a bigger cage i will be adding a plastic box thing full of hay and hopefully they will just go to the toilet there!

its better to have two anyway - for when one is in the wash :))

my thoughts exactly! :)) i only usually but pink vetbed and fleece so thought i would have a change!

i had so many fleeces until we found out our washer was plumbed wrong and they were being washed in dirty water! :)>>> i had to throw them all away... all three bin bags full! 8...

still....excuse to buy more! :))

Ha ha! same here! I have always kept male pets, so when I the girls along with duke ive had pink fleece - poor duke! lol! :))

I'm odd - I use a layer of newspaper, a layer of Megazorb, then a fleece on top. I change the fleece often (usually daily), and do spot cleans of the Megazorb.

that must take alot of megazorb though!

i think towels would be more cost effective....but then again it is more washing! :{

Well, you only have to spot clean through the week (they always tend to wee in their set places), so I don't get through that much, other than in the weekly clean out. I get 2 fleeces in the washing machine, whereas if I used towels as well, I would only get one fleece plus towels in for a load, so yes, definitely less washing that way, so I don't really know which is more expensive. It probably does work out more expensive with the Megazorb, but I just find it so absorbent.

hmmm.... ches and maisie only seem to go for wee's in the hay which has megazorb underneath and it does absorb really well.

we have the smallest washing machine ever though so it takes me ages to wash everything! mallethead

will tell ches and maisie they can't wee on the fleece and vetbed in the new cage, only in the plastic tub thing with megazorb and hay in! :)):)):))

someone on the cage gallery has them - just a clear box cut to allow them to hop in and no lid obv! looks a good idea!

i'm serious! what is wrong with that word?!

erm... maisie would only graffiti it! that better? :))
