I think Penny has an eye infection as pink bits of “flesh” where they shouldn’t be around her eyes. It’s in both eyes so not expecting hay pokes. Also on upper lids so not expecting pea eye. so conjunctivitis seems to be the culprit.

I’ve just made an appointment and she’s going to the vet tomorrow. I wanted to ask here if I need to think of anything underlying causing it? She doesn’t appear to have a respiratory infection, eating like a monster and happy and active and maintaining weight. She’s about 2yrs old. Indoor cage gets full clean every 5 days and cage mate has no problems.

Is there anything I need to ask my vet to check other than the obvious eyes?

I haven’t made a picture as I want to leave it well alone until the vet appointment.

That definitely needs a vet check, please
Let us know how she gets on. Sending love and vibes to her x

Hello! Thanks for getting back to me. I had hoped for anything I should ask the vet to check if there could be something underlying but maybe there are no such things in this case.

I got eye drops as expected! Penny was ever so good whilst being poked and prodded. Vet said it wasn’t too bad yet but good to get action sooner rather than later. Fortunately Its only affecting the (inner) eye lids, no infection or problem with the actual eyes (pupils), which is good.

Should check in with vet (by email) if all ok or by video perhaps if still problematic this time next week.

Hopefully that will do the trick. One of my kids once had something similar (the inner membranes of her eyelids became very red and swollen.) It was an infection similar to pink eye, but affecting the mucous membranes of the eyelids rather than the sclera itself. It went away with antibiotics.

Hey guys,

Reinvigorating this thread. Penny’s eyes are still “funny”. She’s had a second course of drops but they did nothing. She has what looks like pea eye (but isn’t) on both eye lids and both top and bottom.

The vet said that if it didn’t work (the drops) then the option would be to have a sample taken under anaesthesia but the vet herself wasn’t a fan of the idea.

So Penny is completely unbothered by it - no redness in the eye (it’s just on the lids), no scratching, no weight loss, it’s not getting worse either.

Short of going to Northampton again (I can’t really make that a regular thing) does anyone have experience with this unknown thing that looks like conjunctivitis but isn’t? It’s not pea eye. It’s not hay poke.

If not I may try the specialists in Maidstone as it’s a bit closer than Simon & Kim (only 1,5h rather than 2,5h!)

Sorry I’ve just spotted this, Jess’s eye is very similar looking at your Penny pics?
She’s always had it but has got worse with age (nearly 7 and a half now so much older than Penny!), the position she’s in pops it out more sometimes! She had a bit of pea eye in her other one too.

She’s never had issues with it appearing to bother her, me more when it looks larger sticking out like on that one! A few vets have seen her eyes (and obv had the other one removed in October) and it’s never seemed to be an issue, doesn’t seem to affect her vision etc. Hope it’s nothing! x

Thanks hon, that does sound a bit more comforting. I just don’t think I’m ready to have a sample taken from it under anestethic that doesn’t seem right given it’s no bother and not getting any worse. Seems like the vet doesn’t know what to suggest otherwise but it doesn’t feel like the right thing to do at this stage

Yes I agree, sounds pretty sore too! No point in causing any trouble if it’s not bothering her and it’s not worrying you too much, well I don’t think I’d want to either anyway! She looks lovely
Jess’s ‘extra’ tissue hasn’t really got in her way! And obviously it was naughty Luigi that ruptured the other eye! 🙄

It does look like conjunctivitis. Sierra has that early last year. Simon prescribed Isathal just to settle it down. According to Simon, as long as it isn't bothering her and not getting bigger and covering her eye, no need to get it removed. I gave Isathal to Sierra for 2 weeks and it settled it down a bit. Now, after more than a year, I rarely see the conjunctivitis. It seemed it is almost gone and only a tiny bit can be seen if I really inspect it.

Rocky also has the same thing in one of his eyes and it was only treated with Exocin (same med like Isathal) when it was really red and inflamed.

Thanks Andris.

We’ve had two courses of Isathal but it hasn’t changed at all. Not even slightly. Nothing! No worse, no better

I’m trying to remember which drops Jess had years ago, most likely Isathal, when hers got more noticeable (not bothering her but just in case) but didn’t do anything either!

It’s good to know I don’t appear to have the first pig with this particular issue. I might take her to Maidstone specialists - it doesn’t seem right to start taking biopsy and risking infection and anaesthetic at this point

Yes it does seem quite extreme! Hope you can get some answers and she’s ok x
