I have just got the pigs out and have noticed that Edward's penis is protruding from his foreskin when usually it's neatly tucked away. His penis looks normal but it's kind of just hanging there. Should I be concerned or will he put it away himself? It's very rare that I see his penis

It could be a prolapse @Claire W but I don't think these are very common?
If it looks ok with no obvious swelling or injuries I would leave it alone for now, and just recheck in the morning.
If it hasn't sorted itself by then he may need a trip to the vet to have it checked.

Have a look here:

Hi

Try to gently push it back after you have checked for a potential build up of smegma etc. in the fully expressed penis which can make retraction a bit more difficult. Only if it won't go back/not stay up are you dealing with a prolapse - which is rare. In most cases, the penis will go back.

Thank you both. He's grumbling at me when I touch the area but I have checked and there's no build up of any smegma or other debris. Hopefully it will retract itself soon. How long is a reasonable amount of time before I should seek veterinary advise? Not a very good photo but this is what it looks like

Hi Claire, can’t really see. Could you try rubbing a bit of Vaseline on it? A vet recommended this to me when Pippin was poorly last November.

It is difficult to see. does the penis look/feel swollen?

Potentially let his bum soak in a nice warm bowl for a bit to loosen anything that could be stuck around it and give it a gentle wipe, then try and persuade back in with some vaseline?

I have given Edward a small bum bath and applied a tiny bit of vaseline and his penis has retracted back in to his foreskin apart from the tip so it hasn’t fully retracted. Should I do anything else?

I would just keep a close eye on it and see if it fully retracts by itself in the next 24 hours.
It may be slightly swollen at the moment, but as long as it looks ok then hopefully it will resolve itself.

I wouldn’t leave it too long though in case it gets injured or infected. 😃

Odin used to do this on occasion. I used to be able to gently move it back in. When I spoke with Kim about it, she said not to worry as long as it isn’t drying out or swelling. She said she knows of one pig that had surgery to try correct this but it caused more complications and shouldn’t have been done. She said if it had dried a bit, to use a tiny bit of Vaseline (sparingly) to coax it back in, but not to over use this as it causes digestive upsets if they continuously ingest it.

Odin used to do it every other day at one point, but then it cleared up and he stopped 🙈
