Hi,

I have noticed that my 4 years old piggie James' penis sometimes looks weird. I don't really know what to do about this problem but I normally push it back? Can anyone advise me please what to do?
Do I need to take him to the vet?
It happened 2x this week and couple of times in the past. I used to have guinea pigs when I was a kid and I have got 2 at the moment. Any advice please?
Thanks so much! I love my piggies dearly and want to make sure that they are not in pain.

Bless him that looks very swollen, it appears he has something stuck in his sheath, they can get hay or hair wrapped around the penis shaft, or build ups of smegma and this can cause the penis to prolapse or be unable to retract back inside the body. This is likely quite painful for him so I would get him down the vet ASAP if you can. If you feel able to, it may be worth trying to roll the sheath back to see what's forcing it out, you may be able to clean it up enough for it to go back in so it doesn't dry out, but even if it goes back in I would definitely have that checked to ensure blood supply hasn't been lost. It may be that its just too painful for him to do at home though, good luck!

That’s looks uncomfortable for him. If it was my piggy I’d get them checked out at the vets in case there is some hair or smegma build up further up the shaft.

Well done for having him seen so quickly.

I was just very very worried and panicking. I did not want him to be in pain. Vet was very nice. I told them that I have never had this 'problem' before. They told me that it occurs when they get older. Good to know. Thank you for the link. I am going to check it out right now :-)

That’s brilliant news. Glad it was something easily treated. Bet he’s feeling much better now.
