Hi everyone,
I am new to the forum.
My piggy Mr Gilbert had stasis over the new year and luckily he pulled through. We bought him home on the 1st and on the 7th we noticed that he was making noise when he either did a wee or poo. We took him to the vet on the 8th and the vet didn't want to put him on antibiotics due to him being so ill not long ago. They said we should see the furry specialist who we'd been dealing with so last Monday 9th I took him to the vet and they said there was some bacteria and a lot of blood in his wee. He was given Baytril and Loxicom as well as some probiotics and vit c.
We are nearly a week on and just when I thought he was getting better he started to pee a lot of blood again. He has antibiotics until Thursday but I feel like these aren't working so I don't know what to do.
Can anyone give me some advice, please.

I’m sending big hugs as I have a piggie with bladder issues and I know how painfully difficult it can be. I’m sure one of the health experts will be along soon to offer you better advice. But I’d say if no better to ask for maybe an ultrasound to rule out bladder stones❤️

Welcome to the forum and I’m sorry to hear he is unwell.

Were any X-rays or scans done to check for/rule out bladder stones?
That would be the next thing to check.

Make sure you switch from the routine weekly weight checks and ensure you weigh him daily so you can monitor that he is eating enough hay (hay intake cannot be judged by eye). Step in ŵith syringe feeding if he is losing any weight.

I am very sorry to hear your piggy has had bloat and is now peeing blood 😞 Vets always treat for a uti before carrying out further tests but if he’s no better, I would ask your vet to perform an ultrasound or X-ray to check for bladder stones x

Hi there,
Thanks for your quick reply.
He had x-rays done on the 29th and 31st of December at two different vets and neither vet could find bladder stones.

We have noticed he doesn't stretch out like he used to when chilling and snoozing and we've also noticed that he's chewing wood more than before but saying that the last vet checked his teeth and said they looked ok.

He's fine in himself as he's displaying his normal character traits. We have also noticed he's not eating his nuggets as he used to either.

I'm a bit stumped.

If he is bleeding a lot then I would want further scans/x rays done to be sure.

What dosage of pain medication is he on? Is it dog or cat metacam? Is he having it twice a day?

Not stretching out - is he hunching up at all? Hunching is a pain sign.

Not eating nuggets. This in itself is not a issue because nuggets are just one tablespoon per day, and actually the expendable part of the diet. But reducing food intake overall is an issue, reducing hay intake is a major concern.
Are you weighing him? This is essential that it is done daily when they are unwell so you can monitor hay intake, and adjust any required syringe feeding accordingly.

He's on 0.92 Baytril once a day and 2 doses of Loxicom 0.4
When he had stasis he was really hunched up but he isn't nearly as bad now.
He weighs more than he did last Monday but I will weigh him daily now.
Should I wait for his antibiotics to finish before I go back to the vets?

While it may just be that the antibiotics need longer, if he is bleeding again significantly, then I would call them sooner and run it past them.

I'm afraid that impossible for us to answer. Only a vet can make a diagnosis after a hands on examination and tests.
It's just a friend of mine just said it could be that due to the pain killers. I don't know what to think.

I’m afraid that only a vet can make a diagnosis of colitis and prescribe the correct treatment
Thanks for your reply. I think he just needs to finish his antibiotics and then I'll take it from there. This morning his wee looked normal on the pee pads but after I'd given him his drugs there was blood again.

Hello!
First of all, I’m sorry for what’s been happening. Also, thank you for worrying for your piggie and for doing the best for him!

Something similar happened to my piggie some time ago.
Pearlo had an UTI a couple of years ago; we went and got that treated. Some time later, he got another one, so we went to the vet to get that treated. All seemed too well until, some months after this second episode, he started peeing blood again. 😢
What happened was that he hadn’t taken the proper dose of anti-inflammatory! So albeit he took antibiotics the last time as well, we believe that what did the trick was the anti-inflammatory! 😄
Since then, he hasn’t had any case of blood in his pee. So maybe talk to your vet about this! I sincerely hope it helps.

Of course, we took X-rays and US and whatnot. 🙂

I hope it helps!
Wish you the best~

It can take longer to cure a particularly stubborn UTI. It may also be that baytril isnt the right antibiotic to deal with it.
All you can do is report back to your vet if symptoms arent improving and ask for further checks

i wondered are the pain relief medication dog 1.5mg per ml/or 0.5mg per ml cat strenght.the dog loxicom being better.
i use derwent valley vet in matlock....guinea pig vet.ive Fiona who has had a persistant Uti,she has had septrin antiboitic for five weeks and she has only now turned the corner. She also had bloat due to not eating so much,I'm syringe feeding 20mls daily to maintain her weight at 900 grams.
good luck, maybe a change of antibiotic, and patience it takes time to clear a stubborn uti.

Hey,
Thanks for your reply.
He's on the dog loxicom at the moment. I think I need to book an appointment with Ellie as I'm in Derby and Matlock isn't that far.

I was wrong. Just been to yoga, come back and he’s got the . I feel like crying.

Please keep syringe feeding and take him back to the vet. See if there is still bacteria in the urine. He may need a different antibiotic. If they do not find bacteria then an xray and ultrasound might be needed. Also do a urine test for bacteria. This will say whether or not he has an infection. He could possibly have gotten past the infection but now his urinary track is inflammed. Keep in mind that when he is on antibiotics you may want to put him on a pro biotic like Bene-Bac to help his gut flora stay active. May also need a motility drug to keep him pooping.

UTI's seem to happen when a guinea pig sits in a spot for a while and poops/pees in that spot. So if they're super comfortable, it ma be a sign to make sure you clean their spot often. Pay attention to where they sleep.

Mr Gilbert is having another two weeks of baytril and loxicom.
The vet tested his pee and it still has a small amount of blood in it.
