Hello,

(DISCLAIMER: I am booking vets tomorrow and please be gentle with me because I have anxiety and I’m scared enough already)

Just looking for some comfort basically as I came home from two days away to find one of my lady pigs unwell. She was squeaking a little when she went for a wee (not super loud just very quiet squeaks) and I noticed there was a spot of blood with her wee. I felt her *ahem* lady parts and got a lil blood on my hands so it’s definitely coming from there. It’s very pale red, almost like a drop of blood mixed with water. It’s not thick or dark or anything. I checked her over and there was no redness/cuts or anything she looks perfectly healthy. I’m not sure if it’s an infection? She eats and drinks fine, walking around like normal so it only seems to be difficult for her when she wees.

Has anyone had this happen or something similar and just give me an idea of what to expect at the vets?

Sorry for the ramble! Any help would be wonderful. Thank you x

This sounds very similar to what I'm going through at the moment with 2 of my pigs except I had to push for antibiotics because it wasn't at the stage where anything was diagnosable yet and that there was no blood visible. We're still not 100% sure what caused my pigs to squeak but thinking water infection.

We could give you a long list of what it could be but that won't do your anxiety many favours.

But things to think about; how old is she? Is she losing weight? What's her diet like? Is it high calcium?

What may help is for you to record her squeaking while toileting so your vet can see whats going on as she may not pee and squeak while at the vets.

I'd imagine they'd give an exam from head to toe. Palpate the bladder. May get or ask for a urine sample for testing. May need imaging like x-ray to rule out things like bladder stones.

If there's infection they'll prescribe antibiotics (if they do I recommend getting some probiotics as well like pro-c and give it an hour or two after the antibiotic. It helps restock the guts with good bacteria as antibiotics kill good and bad bacteria). Potentially pain killers too. I don't know what they'd do if they suspect or find stones as it's something I'm yet to experience.

If is it an infection, then it usually takes several days for symptoms to firm up - you would be at the very start of it; they can be very on and off at the beginning; red pees interspersed with clear pees with the red ones testing free of blood but clear ones testing high in it, just to add to the confusion...
Your vet is likely to do a urine test to check for blood, crystals and protein and they may also feel the bladder as to whether it is still relaxed and soft to exclude any potential bladder problems early on.

Urinary tract infections or sterile cystitis are very common. Most vets are working their way down the ladder, starting with a bacterial UTI, so you are likely to come home with an antibiotic and possibly an analgesic (painkiller cum anti-inflammatory).

If you are seeing sheer blood and not bloody pees, then your vet should also check the reproductive tract to be on the safe side.

It iss not quite clear from your post.

Hello. I hope you get on ok at the vets. I took my boar Percy to the vets yesterday as he has been squeaking quietly on and off for a week when pooping and/or peeing. No blood in his pee though. They felt his bladder and he didn’t seem to be in pain. They prescribed a painkiller/anti inflammatory. I’ve just dropped off a urine sample so hopefully that might shed some light onto what’s going on with him. My advice to you would be to try and take a wee sample with you today if you can. Let us know how she gets on. Our piggies do like to worry us don’t they?

I have had this with two of my pigs, currently undergoing treatment for one of them. One was more serious but the current one hopefully is under control, it could be as simple as a uti and some anti inflammatory meds for a few weeks. Try not to stress too much, and good luck at your vets appointment!

UPDATE: All good. I met Simon at Cat and rabbit clinic who was super nice (if anyone is in the Northampton area they are honestly amazing there with piggies). She is very healthy and weight is great, he felt her everywhere and she’s perfectly healthy. She just has some painkillers now to help with her weeing as she is squeaking when she wees. She has a small amount of loxicom to take for about 10 days. Funnily enough he mentioned that they can get this due to stress (which is interesting as I was away for a few days and I’m usually with the pigs constantly) plus a lack of fluid so I’m going to give her extra veggies this week to see if that helps!

So long story short, not a worry!

Hi yes the only way I could describe it is if you had some water and dropped a very tiny droplet of blood in that. Her wee was very light pink, not incredibly red.

He did a urine test when she weed there and it still showed very slight blood. She has been given painkiller/anti inflammatory otherwise she is really healthy so he said it’s not a concern and should clear up soon

That’s great news. Just don’t over do the veggies or it might upset her tummy. 😃

Loxicom is a miracle drug! My piggies blood pee level went from a 2+ out of 4 to 1+ in just a week on it, and it really helps! Don’t overdo it on the veggies, you could also syringe feed her some water to help with that too!
