Ok, so I was visiting a friend who’s roommate left 2 piggies behind. They were both very lively at 1st. When I went back 1 (who I named peanut butter) had stopped the activity I saw prior. Noticed his eyes were weepy & all I could say was to watch him & take to vet. Bc she was just left w these 2 loves, she really didn’t want to pay for a vet bill. Went back next day & he clearly lost weight & his eyes were just about shut & his breathing was shallow. I honestly didn’t think he’d make it thru the night. I stayed & made sure he was comfy & he unfortunately did not make it. I cried like a baby. I’m taking in the other 1 (Rocco) but am unsure if I should take him to vet asap Bc of Wht happened to PB. Like unsure if he had some kind of infection which led to his passing. Obviously I don’t want Rocco to suffer but he is still eating well & drinking & is very active. I don’t really hv a lot of $ but figured I’d ask if I should def get him checked out. Sorry if this is a stupid question but I’m new to this. I have a potbelly pig & Thts where my expertise in animals ends. Any advice would be so very welcome & much appreciated. Thank u. Hate when people get pets they can’t or don’t want to care for.

Welcome to the forum

Wll done for taking Rocco in and I’m sorry to hear Peanut Butter didn’t make it

A vet check would definitely be a good idea.
Please ensure you weigh him daily (at the same time each day) as it will enable you to ensure he is eating enough hay (if he is losing weight through not eating, then he needs urgent help). Once you can be sure he is eating plenty of hay, maintaining his weight and is otherwise healthy, then you can change to once weekly weight checks

Once he has a clean bill of health, it will be important to get him a new friend as piggies aren’t wired to be alone. We can help you with further on how to go about that when you are ready.

I’ll add in some of the immediately important care guides below which will help you with further information (more than we can repeat in each post) but please do ask questions. There are plenty of other guides available on the forum but I don’t want to bombard you with lots of information too soon!

Ty so much. I’m going to try to find a vet today just to be sure. Wasn’t expecting this but couldn’t leave him behind. Is it semi easy to introduce him to a new pig?

Good luck. Keep us posted on the vet appointment

Any bonding comes down to character compatibility so it is about finding the right friend. Doing it with the help of a rescue centre is safest. Some offer dating on site so you can be sure the two piggies like each other before you bring a new piggy home; or if you have to do the bonding yourself, theh they would be able to take the piggy back if the bonding failed.
If you were to go to a pet shop and just buy a new piggy, you would be taking a risk that they won’t be compatible, will fight, and will then have to live in two separate cages.
There is also a bonding process which needs to be followed using a neutral territory bonding pen. You can’t just put a new piggy into Rocco’s cage as he will see it as a territory invasion.
Two male piggies together need a lot of space (180x60cm cage) so you would need to get prepared before bringing any another piggy home.

Have you any idea how old Rocco is?

I’m so sorry about Peanut Butter. That’s such a shame. Well done for taking in Rocco. Please double check that he is a boy and any friend is a boy too. Lots of people are sold Mis-sexed piggies and you don’t want to have a unexpected pregnancy.

Unfortunately not, he brought them home about 3 weeks ago then moved out. Not even sure Wht pet store he got them from to see if they would know. So age is not something I can find out I suppose. Vet may hv some kind of idea maybe? I did buy him a cage just for now, Bc I didn’t know wht to get. From watching videos, I’ve got the jist of Wht he/they need. I will work on tht this week

The guides linked to above are invaluable so do have a look through.
