So i made some pea flakes from split peas to give my piggies. and it donned on me that I'm hydrating the pea squishing it and then redehydrating it. Why do we do this? why can't they just eat the split peas right out of the bag?

Peaflakes are made from peas that are more mature than those used for people. They are made using a specialised process called micronisation which improves their digestionability, so it is not the same as feeding dried peas or rehydrating peas, squishing them and drying them out again, which is not something I would recommend.

micronisation is just a fancy word for grinding and milling... fair todays industrial used supercritical liquids (something that should freeze or boil but can't because its in a pressurized container forcing it to stay liquid.) in this case it would be freezing temperature effectively in a tumble drier with steel ball bearings to smash up the frozen peas.. i can replicate that with a food processor and dont have to worry about what oils are being used in the machines to keep them lubricated and getting on my animals pea flakes. i will always trust my self compared to a stranger who has put a finacial backing towards a product and often cannot afford for it to not make profit. you get recalls and consumer warnings about food WE eat all the time, stuff for animals doesn't even get fda tested let alone approved. 0 regulations ect. purina dog food was found to objectively shortening dogs lives years ago in a study. nothing happened legally... they changed their food because after the report it effected the only thing they care about, their stock price....

Now the more matured pea's aspect I'm very interested in hearing more about... i haven't read or seen that anywhere when looking up the process to make pea flakes. where did you learn about this? i got a green thumb i can just grow them and let them mature longer then i would if i was gonna eat them. I'm always interested in doing thing my self. sorry if i dont take advice of "dont do it your self" very well. I can totally accept I'm doing it wrong. just means i got more learning to do. you learn more by asking questions..

Bear in mind peas are high in oxalates and should'nt be fed to piggies often or in any number, especially bladder piggies.
oh yeah its just a treats to feed them a single flake when they really wanna have a wheek attacks at me and i need them to be quiet (on the phone ect). used to give them single pellets but figured it would be a healthier alternative. they get their spoon of pellets as is and while its only one or two extra pellets on a busy day, that adds up...
