So, after moving back to wood shavings and lino (with fleece in their sleeping loft for snuggle factor) because I was finding it too time consuming trying to clear the hay up from the fleece each day, I am now considering paper bedding as I have sawdust everywhere; on my clothes, on the carpet etc. I’ve heard that paper bedding is less messy, so I’m looking for advice please from those that use it.

More or less messy/irritating than shavings?

Paper bedding is much less messy than wood shavings but can be expensive in a large cage- we have a 3x2 area of Kaytee paper bedding with hay on top, then fleece everywhere else :)

I second aubiose. It’s not paper bedding but didn’t seem as messy as shavings. Biocatelet is another good one though not cost effective.

Hi. I use breeder collect cat litter, it's recycled paper pellets. They have one marketed for small animals, but way more expensive. The cat one you can get 30L for £14.
I had to switch from fleece pads as they smelled bad hours after charging. Now I put about 3cm of the cat litter in the bottom of their cage, then fleece on top. I have big covered 'litter tray' where I put newspapers and meadow hay. Then feeding hay is inside in a rack. Top of this box is snuggle area with blankets and beds.
I change the soft bedding (fleece) every other day and scoop the litter that is wet underneath. The box gets cleaned twice a day as it's where the most mess will be and I poo sweep twice a day around the rest of the cage. I have minimal hay spillage outside that box and the pellets don't really stick to the other side of fleece either.
I tried carefresh underneath and omg! Biggest mistake, sticking like crazy....

I have another pair outdoors in piggy shed and they have vetbed/bathroom mats and 3 litter trays lined with newspapers, whatever I use for bedding and meadow hay on top. They're currently only using portion of the shed to help me keep them warm easier so not difficult to line with bathmats.
But I use megazorb/aubiose when they have full access to all levels of their shed (top levels are still snuggly type so hay is in litter boxes). Only use wiodsgavings in litter boxes as it'll be covered in hay. Find it too rough.

Thanks all. I will put my deerstalker on and look into all of the options (as I pick wood shavings out of my dressing gown!)
