Hi

My first post here. I am planning to take on my first piggies in a few weeks from a rescue centre. I have been given a 2 story hutch that I am confident that it is big enough for 2 pigs. It needs a little TLC though and one of the things is that it looks like it could do with a paint/stain. Has anyone done this and have a recommendation for a pig safe stain?

If it isn't safe to do I will just leave it :)

Welcome to the forum :)

My piggies are housed in indoor plastic cages so can not really help - Just thought I'd say hello :)p

Hi and welcome, I also have indoor housed piggies in a C&C cage so can't help with that but have you asked what the rescue's cage size criteria is? just incase the one you have doesn't fit it, just a thought before you spend time and money on fixing it up a smidge.

Hi

thanks for the replies. Yes, it huge! The say the standard 2x4 foot for 2 pigs but this hutch is nearer 2.5 x 4.5 x 2 levels. Let's just say we had fun & games collecting it!

It won't take much to fix. Apart from painting & putting it all back together it needs new bolts (I need to work out how to make it toddler proof) and then a new floor on the base level.

I have actually recently painted all the inside of my hutches to give them a bit of a revamp and to brighten them up - so i painted all mine inside with Dulux breath-easy white wood/metal paint satin (not gloss) and with me being pregnant and I didn't want any horrible fumes and this was the only paint local to me which I thought was suitable enough - I haven't painted all the wood which the piggies can chew, but I have painted all the sides, the back and above, and it looks so much nicer, brighten and cleaner - at first paint did smell a little strong, but was gone pretty much within 5 minutes of opening the tin and none of my piggies have hadn't even bad effect from the paint (nor me either!) - hope that helps!

Thank you. I'll probably go for the stain. The sooner i get it done, the sooner I can fill the hutch :))
