Hi all,

i'll try and keep this short and to the point:

ok so my oldest furry son, Dillon is letting out painful squeaks whilst pooping.

he is eating nuggets and hay ok and i have taken him to the vet (he likes giving me medical problems when it's a bank holiday, a story for another day)

ok, so the vet has ruled out a herniated bladder and a cyst (x-rays were done) but has taken a sample to send to the lab. the doctor also said that he has some inflammation in his gut and gave me something for that which was mixed in with metacalm he is getting one daily dose of 0.6 which seems like a lot to me. The doctor says he has a swelling near bottom as well and my wife noticed his tender.

now Dillon has never been a fan of hugs much and usually screams blue murder when we take him out of his cage...but i'm beginning to think that this might be a symptom that we missed early on. While he has been on the medication he has been fine to pick up and seem very ok with it... he also loves the medication and tried to chew the syringe to get more even when it was empty.

i was advised to keep an eye on him and report back in a few days (thursday) to see how he was holding up but tonight i have heard that painful squeak again...i'm not comfortable with waiting until thursday so i'm calling them in the morning (tuesday) other than this he carrying on pretty much as normal.

all help and advise welcome.

Sounds like you have everything under control. I would advise speaking to the vet again but you are already going to do that.
How long after he has had his meds do you hear the pain squeak? Metacam doesn't last for 24 hours so it might be worth asking your vet about splitting the dose in half and giving twice dsily.

he gets one daily does in the evening and he had today's at about 5:30pm-6pm and i heard him squeak in pain at about 8pm-ish and again a few moments ago

So not after a long time then. I don't know what else to suggest. Your vet might want to do an ultrasound which will show up soft tissue better than an x-ray and hopefully the lab results give you some answers.

OK, here is a brief update on furry son number 1:

phoned the vet at 9am and made an appointment... only one i could get was 11:45am. The vet phoned us back at 10:30am to tell us that she couldn't help us but would refer us to an exotic pets doctor.

thankfully this exotic pets doctor is not the one in Coatbridge but in Falkirk which is much closer and avoid any possible police road blocks and having to play twenty questions with them.

Dillon has now been taken in there and the doctor thinks that the swollen area might be a red herring and that it might be an issue with his bladder. masks were worn, social distancing enforced and paperwork and bank details exchanged...exotic translates as expensive...oh well, never really had anything planned for that pay rise anyway lol.

All the best! I hope that they can work out what is the problem.

Hi all, ok this first bit is going to be be a bit of a rant, so you might want to skip this and go down to the update: so after another "fun packed" 15 hour night shift, i arrived back at my depot for just after 8am, then proceeded to falkirk to collect Dillon as per the doctors advice that he might eat more at home and in familiar surroundings. listening to the radio and hearing about how wonderful the NHS is and how people will view key workers in a new light after this is all over...oh boy did that really rubbed me up the wrong way this morning. if the doctors and nurses were getting treated the way us truck drivers are being treated then their canteens would be shut along with their toilets and showers facilities. the stench of urine and other body waste materials at the truck park areas of motorway service stations is rather unpleasant to say the least...so much for keeping clean and washing your hands regularly and as part of a two man crew we can't social distance from each other as the truck cab isn't big enough, so it's a case of when not if we get the virus...kind of ironic to think that today i brought from birmingham to scotland rubber PPE gloves for the hospital and food for asda and some pet supplies for a well known chain of shops...rant over, sorry just had a rough night and worrying about my furry son is not helping.

Update:

OK so the doctor says taking him home and being in a familiar surrounding might increase his appetite but he is still eating but not much, i supposed we'd all feel the same after being poked and prodded by strangers in our nether regions. Inspected Dillon who took one look at me and chose to hid under the towel we put in his carry case, clearly showing his displeasure and seeing his dad, (i suspect he is going to have the hump with me for 2-3 days) He's not himself, a lot quieter but this might be due to the medication and oh boy there is a metric poop ton of the stuff.

double the dose of his metacalm, he's got pro-biotics, antibiotics and some anti inflammatory liquid as well as a load of critical care, all of these bar the critical care are in large doses, i've never seen that amount being pumped into a guinea pig before which is causing me a lot of concern now Dillon is a big boy who has always loved his food and is 1.3kg in weight which i think might be in his favour. i also think another reason he is being sent home is the vet is short staffed and baby sitting a guinea pig is not high on their list...personally i would sooner have him at the vets in case something goes wrong but i am praying that he will pull through. i have discussed this with my wife and we are both of the opinion that this has been rumbling on for some time and that we missed some of the early warning signs, which is easy to do as guinea pigs hide their illnesses so well.

current vet fees: £560 for anyone who is interested

sorry about the rant earlier it's been a rough week and it's not going to get any better any time soon...wish i could be furloughed and get paid to stay at home and play with my furry children.
