Hello on March 29 my guinea pig Kreacher was taken to the vet for diarrhea. they gave him an antibiotic called Flagyl. it got better, and his poops never looked better. but then on April 5 he started having pain while defecting. i know this because he would squeel and vocalize it. It's obvious it was really hurting him. i took him to the vet, they did x-rays and ruled out bladder stones and UTI. they said it was probably inflammation in his spine, so she started him on metcam and gabapentin. no improvements at all. So we took him to another vet and they said he was eating and drinking fine which he had been doing throughout all of this, and said to just continue him on the meds e was previously prescribed. So today, still no improvement and he looks very ill and sunken in. it's obvious whatever is happening is hurting him. took him today, vet did an ultrasound and said he has fluids outside his organs. She wasn't opposed to the idea of having him put down. my question is, should i? Or is there any hope? Any way this problem can be fixed?
thanks

Just bumping this up as it seems to have got missed due to being posted during the UK night-time.

Was your vet at all specific about where the fluid was? Piggies can get fluid round the heart, which can be treated with diuretics. I don't really see a connection between the pain while defecating which you have observed, and fluid retention; however I am not a medical expert, hopefully one of those will see your post now and be able to help more.

I hope someone with experience of these issues comes along soon. I hope your piggy gets better soon 🤞🏻

I am really sorry you’re going through this.

I have not dealt with this before, but from what I know, the vet should have laid out options for you. If they did could you let us know what, so perhaps someone with a similar experience could share their side of things.
Did they specify where the fluid was, as there are different risks and treatments for each area.

I am wishing you and Kreacher all the best. x
