So here I was thinking Vinnie was going to cause me trouble but it was his brother Curly today. He has started to cry when weeing since yesterday and his undercarriage was wet with wee. I have been to the vets and he had a few sperm rods removed that I did not know were there then he had a catheter inserted to make sure there were no more blocking him. The vet found some mucus fragments up there and was quite perplexed, she is getting a second opinion on these. Poor curly has some pain relief and hopefully will feel better soon. Has any one had experience of sperm rods causing a blockage or mucus?

I had to clear sperm rods almost weekly :vom: from RB Piggy Silver Fox Christian as he had arthritis in his spine and so he couldn't clear them himself. This is the largest one I had to remove. Needless to say I did it VERY gently! If I hadn't been confident of what I was doing I would have gone to the vet for its removal. This would certainly have caused a blockage.

HUGE Sperm Rod.webp

Poor lad, that can't have been very nice. Sperm rods seem to be pretty normal but mucus I'm not sure about. If he is still dripping pee and crying it might just be mechanical damage but it might also be the beginnings of an infection so if your vet doesn't mention that you might ask her about it... if she's ruled that out already it will help you to know her thought process. My boy first got 'creaky knees' when he was 3 1/2 so it's worth considering whether there was an underlying reason Curly couldn't clean himself - like in @Betsy 's piggy's case. Brave boy Curly x

I've never seen him have any issues cleaning himself he's not quite two and this was his first ailment. I was hoping for no stones as Vinnie has suffered with these and they are already on a low calcium diet because of that.
He's still making crying noises this evening but he's eating normally and climbing on the carrot house and attempting to hump Vinnie so he's not that distressed. I hope tomorrow his issue has improved. Also the vet said she would call me as she had never seen the mucus thing before and was getting a second opinion I'm not sure if it's significant or not. He was very brave poor thing I wish guineas were less prone to illnesses

I know - my George has an ongoing stone issue and now one of the others has started to squeakle occasionally while peeing. I was thinking what bad luck but actually it's only because George's issue has been going on for so long that this new thing is overlapping! Hopefully it's just a bit of sludge - but Flora always dutifully wipes her bits on the ground to scent mark after she's peed so I expect it's a UTI - whether she's fight it off or whether it'll get worse I don't know.
Hubs wonders if she's quietly trying out a 'squeaky pee' because she covets George's tasty metacam and syringe food!

Curly is booked back in to see the vet tomorrow morning, he is now peeing blood and appears to be in more discomfort poor little mite. Wish us luck

We saw a exotic vet this morning and he had a scan, thank god no stone was seen. She thinks he has a stress related cystitis he's had his pain meds increased and a shot of an opioid we also have some nutacys to put on his food

Ooh that is a tricky one. There are people on here with more experience than me but if you search round the forum you will find lots of advice on threads about sterile interstitial cystitis (SIC). If he has this it can't be 'cured' as far as we know but the flare-ups can be managed with painkiller and glucosamine supplements.

Our issue with Curly has continued and he was in so much pain we have been back to the vets this morning and he had an x-ray and it confirms he does have a stone 😓the first view it was not seen but the side on view it was very visible. The scan did not pick up on this and the hands on feel did not. He's having surgery today. I'm so nervous for him the poor mite it was his second birthday on Monday he's so young still and has been on a very low calcium diet because of Vinnie and his stones!

Curly is on day three after his op to remove his stone. He has not bounced back like Vinnie did but we are just taking each day as it comes. He's eating and drinking and chewing his carrot house. I'm sure he hates me now when I go to see him he lays flat but when I walk away he gets up again. The stone had become lodged in the entrance to his bladder and they had to push a catheter up to push it out. The stone on the left was Curlys the one on the right was what Vinnie had removed in August last year, that filled his bladder! We are getting a collection 😓

😱that's gigantic! Poor babies, you have all my understanding! My Geezer has peed out stones of various sizes for a year until 3 weeks ago when one did exactly the same thing as with your boy and he had to be taken to emergency surgery. Yesterday his cagemate got surgery for a big one too. Luckily the vet had pity on me and gave me a discount 😓

How did yours do after his surgery? Curly is brighter than yesterday but not himself. I think my vet took pity on us too I was warned about the cost but it seemed to be similar to last year's and I know they have gone up. But I had spent nearly 200 the previous week on scans and appointments. I said if he pulls through he needs to be their pet of the month!

Geezer took longer to recover from the anesthesia, the surgery was in the evening and around 3am he started to remember how to chew food. It took him a couple of days to go back to his normal self, and about 5 to get normal/healthy looking poops again. Rutto was quite ok already a couple hours after coming home, this afternoon is already his normal self, if a bit shaken. Some are more sensitive than others to the anesthesia, is he eating by himself?

Yes he's eating and drinking himself not his usual grazing but he's eating his normal stuff. He is also weeing blood and crying alittle they said this is normal for now. I actually cannot remember what Vinnie was like at this stage I caught COVID when Vinnie had his op and was battered by it and I was 36 weeks pregnant so my mind is hazy about it all

If you worry he's not eating enough you can try to hand feed him the good bits of hay, or top him off with some critical care (maybe just let him lick it off a stick, so he can decide how much to take at a time, if at all). Weeing blood and some crying are normal, it should clear up by tomorrow. Seeing them wee without pain is a great feeling. I know the first day is miserable and it hurts seeing them being all weird, but it will get better 💚Best wishes to you and the boys!

Good luck with your piggy. Fingers crossed he’s soon on the mend. I lost my Percy last August to a bladder stone. It’s such a worry after an operation.

Did you get antibiotics after his surgery to prevent/treat infection post-op? If not, that's what I'd be watching for at this point. My vet routinely gives an AB injection for the surgery and then usually a short course for the recovery but George had been really struggling on an AB for a UTI in the months before his op (it meant he didn't get the op for a long time) so we held off following his stone surgery and hoped for the best. We got lucky. I hope things continue to improve for your boy x

Yes we got antibiotics he has just finished them today, it's been a week and the vet has signed him off. He's still not 100% but he's eating and drinking he just seems quite. I know it's a big op plus he's lost abit of weight so I'm keeping a close eye on him. He's still on his pain meds. The vet said he will be pet of the month, he's showing his scar off in the picture and has now bedded down with Vinnie ❤️

That's great if he's finished his course. Sometimes the ABs can knock their joie de vivre a bit so he may improve more! Sometimes any infection hasn't quite cleared - if so you'll know about it within the next 2 or 3 days as he'll start getting worse again. Just contact the vet - he may have to use a different AB or the same one for a longer course. But he's looking like a little trooper right now. Well done lovely boy! x

Yes he's really picked up now he's stopped them, he looks really good and his body feels like it's filling out again. It didn't help that the antibiotics were all over him and it was slicking his hair down. He must have cleaned his mouth and rubbed it all over 😆
