Buzz unfortunately had to have a bladder stone operation last Monday (8th February) but he is unfortunately having some discomfort when peeing. He wasn't before and his pee is now drying redish-orange which suggests a UTI, this is strange as he is still on metacam and baytril until tomorrow!
I took him to the vets today and she said to continue on with the metacam and baytril like the other vet advised finishing on the 18th, does anyone know whether I should take him back and ask for a different antibiotic or whether I should just ring and ask whether to extend the duration of the meds?
Might be important to mention he's also having pain when he poos (starting before the pain when peeing) so the vet prescribed emeprid twice daily which we are starting on today!
We are also still syringe feeding as he is not eating hay as readily as we would like and isn't putting on weight so far 🙁

What dosage of metacam is he on and is it dog or cat metacam?

With regards weight, are you weighing him daily at the same time? How much are you getting him to take of syringe feed and how often? Are you also giving him a probiotic (before or after the antibiotic). They help because the antibiotic kills the good bacteria as well as the bad.

When is he booked in for a review with the vet? Have a read of the guide I’ve linked below. Someone more knowledgeable will be along in good time.

Weighing him daily at the same time (4pm) for the last 2 days and it's not changed! He's on 0.4ml metacam once daily, it's the cat variety I believe.
He's eating veggies as we would expect so the syringe feeding is every 4-6 hours and we aim for about 10mls each time whilst also getting him to eat about a handful of hay, I haven't been adding probiotic as I thought the critical care contained it but I will do that from now on! His review was tomorrow but as they took the stitches out today I believe that has been cancelled.

Veg is a mere snack so isn’t enough. He also needs fibre. I would up the number of times you syringe feed him. Hopefully he maintains his weight.

I’m not sure about dosage but Guinean pigs have a high metabolism rate so should get the painkiller twice daily. I’d speak to your vet about that.

Just to add a photo of a sleepy buzz, you can see the urine colour (looks more red tinged in person). I'm posting this in the middle of a feed! ☺️

Gorgeous boy.

Has his urine been tested for blood?

Guinea pig urine oxidises after they pee, so a slight orange-red tint is not unusual, and not always a sign of a problem.

Also the Metacam dosage is very low and should definitely be split into two doses. The effects will not last 24 hours, so every 12 hours is better.
I would speak toy your vet about increasing it and splitting it to see if you can get his pain under control.
Bladder issues can take a few weeks to settle so hang in there.
