My 3 year old Guinea pig has been diagnosed with ovarian cysts today. She is getting more bald , however she is happy and eating just like normal. I am thinking about getting her spayed. Does anyone know any good piggy savvy vets in Shropshire area?

Hi and welcome

Here is the link to our recommended vets lists: Recommended Guinea Pig Vets

If we have members from your area, perhaps they can give further recommendations.

thank you. Would you recommend getting the operstion done ?

Hi

That is unfortunately not a question we can answer for you sight unseen due to lack of relevant health and background information. This is not as clear cut a question as you seem to assume. We can only show you potential avenues to pursue with your vet and support you until and during any treatment and reocvery.

This kind of chat is reserved for your vet after a due examination where they will tell you your various options and will answer your questions about the various pros and cons. The decision can always only be made by the owner - it is their privilege and burden all in one. Any operation that is not a potentially life saving emergency operation is always a careful weighing up of risks and benefits.

I am having my middle-ages ladies vet checked and have those operated where cysts could turn nasty in later life or where fluid-filled old cysts put on a major growth spurt and become a problem in older sows. Other forum members have made equally good experiences with hormone treatment. The majority of ovarian cysts goes actually unnoticed and never causes any symptoms or problems.

Yeah the vet said they are small at the moment but they can grow throughout life and rupture. She’s 3 now so she’s not too old to have the operation. She doesn’t know much about the injections but said it won’t be as effective as spaying as they are able to come back. She is happy and esting just like normal but her baldness is spreading into her back and I feel like it’ll gte worse .

A spay is quite a major operation. In our experience on this forum, the pros and cons about preventative spaying are currently somewhat in the balance but if hormonal ovarian cysts are causing problems then treatment is needed, whether that is an ovariectomy from the back (just removal of the ovaries), a full spay from the belly (removal of the whole reproductive tract) or hormone treatment.

I have a had a number of 5 year old successfully emergency spayed and a few sows with hard cysts that were at risk of turning cancerous later in life spayed at around 3-5 years. My vet perfers operating and they are very good at it.

Members with hormone treatment may give you their own long term epxerience feedback.

Hi l use Severn Edge vets at Much Wenlock. They are listed on the recommended vets but Rob, the vet I used to see has since left. The vet i mostly see there now is Ingrid, who is very good with piggies and passionate about them. She is a very good surgeon and has successfully operated on three of my piggies in the last year or so but none of these were spays and I don't know what her experience with spaying is but it would be worth speaking to her. I believe there is also a piggy vet at the Bridgnorth branch called Lucus who is very good but I don’t have personal experience there other than for out of hours.

That is very helpful thank you. I have been wondering if anyone had experiences with the new vets since Rob left. Lucas is closer to me but if you have had a good experience I would feel more comfortable with Ingrid.

Yes Rob leaving was a massive loss, i know he was planning to set up a practice in Telford after having to wait a year and in the meantime was operating a mobile surgical mentoring practice for vets. MSM vets. But it seems he is now continuing with this. Ingrid doesn't have the same experience but like I say has passion and is a good vet and will look into things she is less familiar with.

That is a shame! I wish I could have tried Rob. But I will give Ingrid a go. If you don’t mind me asking, what were the surgeries she did on your piggies ?

Two of them were bladder stones and the other was an eye enucleation. So more straightforward than spaying.

Also I remember seeing a post on Fuzzy Furries rescue, near Shrewsbury, fb a while back saying they were going to have sows spayed, so it might be worth speaking to them too?

Ingrid isn’t confident is operating on my piggy. I think it’s because we asked a lot of questions but we are trying to find the best vet possible. Is there anywhere else in Shropshire thwy I could Try?

Thats a pity but I always like her honesty.
I dont know of other practices. All I can suggest as I say, is that you could ask Fuzzy Furries rescue who they use, as I think they may have had sows spayed.

I have tried messaging them but not replied Back yet. Have you heard anything about Taylor and Marshall. I had the consultation Tbere to be diagnosed with ovarian cysts. But unsure about the experiences as the Guinea pig vet left at the start of the hear but they said they are still doing them apparently

Sorry, I know nothing about them. You could still try Lucas in Bridgnorth, I know he is more experienced than Ingrid but I don't go there because it is a long way for me.

Ingrid and Lucas were going to do my piggies spay together untik they changed their mind so I’m unsure whether he would do it as they’ve been talking .

Marie at Taylor and Marshall was a fantastic vet, my bunny Miley used to see her. She left though as you say, and after that we moved to another practice.
I never saw any of the other vets there, although there is a male vet there who was seeing a chicken, so he may have some exotics experience too? 🤔

Would you consider travelling to Northampton? Simon Maddock at the Cat and Rabbit Care Clinic is incredibly experienced in spaying guinea pigs, having done very many over the years. I think you would be looking at an hour and half trip, but you would be getting the best operating vet.

I don't know where in Shropshire you are but Nicolleta is an exotic vet based in cleobury (Severn edge). Or Emily Davies from the Ludlow/craven arms branch. While Emily isn't exotics she's done a lot of guinea pig and rabbit surgery. She neutered 2 of my boars and has been excellent with all my pigs .

I think that’s too far to be honest. I have got her booked into white cross vets at Wolverhampton. The lady said she’s done many Guinea pigs and does well with them. She also has Guinea pigs herself . So I’m hoping it all goes okay there
