Hello! I’m new to the forum…we have a 4 year old female pig named Ginger. About 6 months ago we noticed some blood on her fleece bedding, so we took her in to see the vet. The blood was determined to be coming from her vagina. She placed her on a few rounds of antibiotics and anti inflammatory, which seemed to work for a bit, but the blood was reoccurring. They did an X-ray which all looked normal, they recommended an ultrasound to further assess, but we decided to watch her for a bit. All this time Ginger is acting completely normal, wheeking, eating, etc. Blood started again and we went back to the vet and saw a different one who I felt more comfortable with. She examined her and was able to feel a very lump which she thinks is an ovarian cyst. She gave her an injection of a hormonal drug and she has gotten those about 4 times now, about 4 weeks in between. The blood comes back always, in small amounts, but never does it seem to make her feel bad. She eats like crazy, doesn’t act any different. So, the next steps they said would be to possibly spay her, after doing an ultrasound to more thoroughly look at the cyst (she can still feel it, it hasn’t gotten any bigger). Has anyone gone through this? I really hate to put her through a surgery when it seems to not be affecting her quality of life. Thanks in advance!

I personally don't have any direct experience of this, but I know we have a few members who have had older sows spayed for ovarian cysts.
If the vet doing the operation is experienced and confident and your sow is in otherwise good heath then it should be fine.
It sounds like you have kept on top of things and have a good vet, so if she does need an operation hopefully it will go smoothly.

Welcome to the Forum. :wel:

Priscilla was spayed at around 4 years old because of ovarian cysts.
She came through very well and lived until she was about 5.5 years old.
I had a very good vet so was confident in going ahead.

You know your piggy best and in your heart you will know the right decision for her and you.
