My Petal has had an ovarian cyst diagnosed today. She had been really fine and herself and eating loads just 30g weight loss. The vet thinks it’s active so has started hormone injections she’s had the first one today and the next one in ten days. But since we got back from the vets she really hasn’t been herself at all hardly moving much. I’m worried it’s not just the shock of the vets. Could the infection have negatively affected her? Any experience with ovarian cysts? Thanks 🙏🏼

Hi

More information on ovarian cysts: Sows: Behaviour and female health problems (including ovarian cysts)

Give your girl time to get over her vet trip and injection but step in with feeding support if she is still not eating by the time you are going to bed.
Keep in mind that three quarters of what a piggy eats in a day is hay which you cannot control by eye but that just 30g of weight loss amounts to merely the difference between a full and an empty belly and the normal weight swing over the course of 24 hours, so I would not panic. We only talk about weight loss from 50g onward.

If needed, you can find all necessary support information via this guide here: All About Syringe Feeding and Medicating Guinea Pigs with Videos and Pictures

If your girl has indeed a bad reaction, then here is our practical emergency care information bundle.

All the best. She will hopefully get her bearings again. Place some hay close by and leave her be for now.

Hello!

My piggie Buttercup had ovarian cysts. She just had lupron injections and they fortunately worked well for her. She had fur loss on her sides and strong seasons that never seemed to end. The injections took care of those symptoms. I forget how frequently we did them...once every 2-3 months till the symptoms returned. At the time the vet said they could do it every 2 weeks if needed (if I'm remembering correctly)

They did say the injections were painful so maybe that's why she's not quite herself. Just keep her supported with food 💖

We were not given spaying as an option.

Thanks so much for your advice. I’m happy to say she has perked up and is eating hay right now! Maybe the injection was a bit of a shock for her.

The vet said the same thing about the weight loss. I could see it though which is why I took her for a check and he felt the cyst. Here’s hoping the injections work for her

Thanks so much for your reply. I think her reaction must have been to the injection as she’s much more herself now a few hours later. She was down for a few hours though not moving much. Here’s hoping the injections will work for her too. He said to me they only work in 50% of cases. He said being spayed was an option but he wouldn’t really recommend unless desperate x

Go to bed and have a good night's sleep after a stressful day. Your girl should be fine from now.

Fingers crossed the injections work for her and I'm glad she's feeling better - my piggy Delilah had cysts, we had one set of injections and they worked great for about 6 months but then the cysts came back and after a second set of injections the ultrasound showed that they weren't working and there were worrying changes to her uterus, so she had to be spayed. She had a bit of a rough recovery from the op and spent about a week in and out of the vets, but 6 months on she's doing absolutely fantastic, her hair has all grown back and she's perkier than she'd ever been since I got her 🙂

(Delilah is the ginger bundle of fluff)

Yes, my vet has said the same. It really depends on whether hormones are causing the cysts. My older girl Belle is being treated with three injections of Chorulon for the same thing.
