What are the options if you don't opt for ovarian surgery? I've had one pig through the surgery already and I'm not against it. But I could do with knowing the options.

Been aware Pumpkin has had ovarian cysts for a while but she previously had no symptoms, so we left them alone. Pumpkin has been rumbling many times a day at Nancy for over a month. Pumpkin had a very close call a few weeks ago with potential stone where I nearly had her put to sleep as she had already had stone surgery 3 weeks prior. She was injected with fluid and cerenia and it seemed to clear it, only had one squeak since it's been better.

So I'm reluctant to put her through ovarian cyst surgery when I don't know what's going on yet stone wise. But to complicate matters I am having surgery in 6 weeks and they are going to piggy boarding for 6 weeks. I will be unable to look after them and when I get them back I'm doubtful if I could look after an operated pig as I will likely still be on crutches. So by not doing something now I would not be able to operate until at least October, but maybe November.

So I either need to arrange surgery quickly which I'm not sure if the best plan for her but wondering if I'm asking for trouble if i dont. She isn't chasing Nancy, it's just rumbling at her a lot but I'm concerned if it could go to that level which would be bad for Nancy's IC and obviously not good for Pumpkin. Don't know what to do. Will have to discuss with vet. But knowing what is out there option wise would be helpful. Thank you

Hi

Depending on how urgent the removal operation is you can either wait for several months or ask your vet whether they would be amenable to trying hormone treatment. But by far not all vets are willing to.

What cannot wait are fast growing cysts, extreme and very disruptive behavioural cysts or potentially hard cancerous cysts.

Here is our guide to ovarian cysts: Sows: Behaviour and female health problems (including ovarian cysts)

Thank you. I wouldn't say it was very disruptive. Just concerned it could become very disruptive and I wouldn't be able to do anything about it.

Looking at this link I don't think I'm keen on hormonal treatments if there is major side effects. Pumpkin has no uterus, it would be a side operation to remove the ovaries. So I guess it's a conversation of how long I should leave it. Thank you.

My piggy had a hysterectomy last November she was 5 at the time. This was 3 months after the vet initially felt something was wrong and they tried the hormone injections first. I'm prettysure it was 3 weeks between each injection and it was 3 or 4 injections in total.

then she had another x ray or ultrasound to see if it had worked and it hadnt so then we went for surgery. The surgery was pretty brutal i remember picking her up completely delusional that she would be happy to see me but she wasnt well at all. She was ill for a good 10 days i was back at the vets a few time panicking but with a lot of recovery plus and tonnes of meds daily she got through it. She doesnt even have a scar now.

Obviously every pig is different and every vet does things differently i just wanted to give me 2 pence. I'm having a terrible time with my girl possible stone in bladder I'm back at the vets monday for tests i understand your worries completely. I wish you and your piggys the best

Sorry to hear she had such a hard time. It's really hard when surgery hasn't gone well. Glad it worked out in the end though.

I've already put one through the surgery. And my Pumpkin has had 3 surgeries already bless her. So I have an idea of what to expect.

Oh no! I hope she doesn't have bladder stones.
