My piggies are outdoor piggies all year round except for last winter when I had to bring them in because of the really cold weather. They are in an insulated hutch with covers and an electric heater.

I've always had a cheap little thermometer installed inside the hutch so that I can check the temperature inside, however this is a bit inconvenient and difficult to read at times and also means once I drop the cover on a night time I have no way of knowing. I've just ordered a wireless outdoor thermometer to use in the hutch instead. It has a sensor that can be installed in the hutch and an LCD display for inside the house displaying the temperature. In theory, I should now be able to know the outdoor (well, inside the hutch) temperature at any time of day from inside the house. Some nights I worry they'll be cold and there's no real way to know, so I'm hoping this will help me out. It also has a minimum / maximum temperature available too, so I'll know how low the temperature got down to during a night.

Just though I'd pass this on if anyone spends their nights in bed worrying whether the pigs are too cold!

I just ordered this model below and will let you know how it goes:

A million billion thanks, the OH only said today 'have you got a thermometer yet?' but I too had only found little mercury ones that looked hard to read/inaccurate

That is so cheap too, I was expecting £30 at least!

Woo you made my afternoon :))

You're welcome, I'm hoping it'll make life a little easier and I'll be able to keep track overnight which is when I really worry they're cold. It's loads cheaper than I expected too, let's hope it does the job! :)) xx

They also sell them in Boots for about a £10. I have had mine years and use it in the shed all the time it tells you currant temp, How low its got over night and the highest its been. In other words you can see how warm the conditions are for your animals at a glance. Mine live in a heated and insulated shed all year round but I still like to see the temps.

i have got one from amazon and works great heres the link :)

i almost bought that one, i wasn't sure what the difference was to be honest because the price is the same! :{

i have to say, this thermometer has opened my eyes, one night it was 3 degrees celcius out there, and i think i take a lot of precautions to keep my pigs warm. they already have a heater installed inside the hutch, numerous covers. i'd really encourage people to get one so they know the real temperature in their hutch! we've decided to install another heater in now because of it and i'm ashamed to say i was totally in the dark about how cold they could get out there! :( xx
