As my piggies are kept in a garage in their hutch I was wondering if its too cold out to let them into a run. The run would be in the garage but I'm worried the floor may be too cold etc. Could I line the floor with fleece? My OH doesnt mind them in the house for cuddles but wouldnt be too happy about them running free (plus we have a dog). Its a bit hard at the minute as my children are un aware we have the little cuties!

In the spring/summer they will be in the garden for exercise, cant wait!
Thanks :)

if you think about how cold the floor would be if you didn't have any shoes on you'd understand how could it would be for your pigs !
If you wanted to line it i'd recommend using some fleece and towels just so it's thicker, I'm not sure though as my pigs are allowed inside and i just make run out of DVD's
i guess it's down to you judgement in the end but it could lead to cold's etc, My pigs are lazy bums anyway when they go out for a run indoors they just want to lay down and sleep ! you might find the same haha :)

If you put a heater in the garage and towels on the floor and give them the option of staying in the hutch if they want then I see no problem with it :-)

The floor of the garage would probably be too cold for little piggy feet and you need to consider their bellies often touch the ground. Considering they already live in the garage, I think a run would be fine in there so long as you use fleece / towels for them to run on.

My pigs used to run around in our kitchen which has a stone floor so was very cold especially in winter. We just gave them fleece and towels to run around on. They now use the living room and spare room which is carpeted but I still use fleeces to protect the carpet!

They run does have a "bedroom compartment" as I call it. I do have a fan heater in the garage which was on low during the couple of days we had that really low temps.

I think putting towels/fleece down and see how they go will be a good start.

Thanks

Well the run has arrived and is "up and running". The guineas seem to like it although as they are pretty new to us they still run and hide when they hear us coming!

In the spring I would ideally want to move the run onto the grass in the garden. As I have a dog is it just not going to be possible with her weeing pooing on the grass all winter?

Thanks
Becky

They will love being on the grass on warm dry days. :)

Think about your garden set up and see if you can block some off from your dog.

I have 2 small children and a dog, they have one half of the grass, I have rabbits in a quarter of the garden and then the other that's left is for piigy grazing and fenced off from doggy wee and poo. I got a cheap roll of 3ft high fencing from Wilco's held up with some bamboo garden canes.

It would all depends on how much grass and how big garden you had. But if you can prepare some grass away from 'doggy doos' that would be great.

The fence I have is in the forefront of this picture and the piggy runs behind. It doesnt stop my dog going in if she really wanted to (she loves trying to eat the piggy poo) but for the sake of a wee she would rather do it quickly where its not fenced off if you know what I mean.
