Hi
I am thinking of getting an outdoor run for our Guinea pigs once the weather has warmed up next year. I still plan to bring them back indoors at night. Would they cope with going back and forth or is it better to either keep them completely indoors or outdoors. I do prefer them inside but want to give them more chance to exercise and munch on fresh grass when the summer comes. I should add that we do let them run around inside so they still get some exploring time :).

The climate here is very different to there, but I put mine out for about 3 hours in the morning, then bring them back inside around 10;30 / 11 when it starts getting far too hot.
On work days I put them out for about 2 hours in the evenings.

They love being outside! Haven't had any problems moving them back and forth.

How warm is warm in terms of what temperature and/or time of year it is safe to start introducing outside time?

As far as I know if you are comfortable outside wearing a t-shirt then it's warm enough for the pigs. Just be sure it doesn't get too hot and that they always have access to a shaded area.

Do you know approximate temperature though? Different people are happy to go outside in just a t-shirt vs more layers at very different temperatures, depending on the climate of where they live and what they are used to.

I found this on www.rspca.org.uk:
"Protecting from draughts/temperature extremes. They're sensitive to temperature changes. Temperatures above 26°C can cause heat stroke; below 15°C can cause them to become chilled."
