To those out there with out door piggies:

With the weather being what it is at the minute, I am feeling guilty to my girls. They have a hutch snuggle and hutch hugger around their hutch. For the last 2 days, I have kept the rain cover of the hutch hugger pulled down over the front as it has been so windy and rainy. They are lovely warm and dry but I still feel bad as the front cover has been down 24 7 and they haven't been out as much as I'd like as they don't like getting wet when they are being transported from the yard to the house. (The rain cover is see through).

I am just wondering what other people use to stop their hutches from getting wet and how you have your piggies out or transport them from the hutch?

Hi claire,

it sounds like you have used all the precautions to keep your guinea pigs warm and dry. I myself don't have outdoor piggy's my two are house guinea pigs. Don't feel guilty. i do tho transport my two in a large pet carry if i am going out to the vet or to my friends with them. oh just a thought do you have a shed or some shelter where * can place the hutch so it cant get wet? just a thought.

take care x

Thank you for your reply. Yes, we have an out building that they use to live in but it has started to leak and has became gloomy. The hutch does stay dry and is in a sheltered area. I am just wondering what other people use :) I always feel guilty to them as I'd love them to live indoors but it just ins't practical :( x

awww i can understand my girls cage takes up ALOT of room in my bedroom. I wouldn't let them live outside as it's too dangerous because we get foxes in our garden. the weather is reaqlly bad at moment isn't it?

i know how you feel mate, ive moved my piggies inside because of the weather, but theyve seriously downgraded to a small cage, i tell you what you just cannot win either way!lol. as long as you know youve done everything you can, then take peace of mind in that! they know you love them, otherwise they would be wet, miserable and cold wouldnt they! youre trying your best, remember that-there lucky piggies!gemx

Mine are outside in hutches.

Just under the window in a sheltered area - Ive got plastic covers on the hutches and layer bubble wrap and use old carpet over winter to keep them dry/warm.

Id love to get a shed in the garden for the gang but parents not too keen on that idea as Its a small garden - light would be an issue there too (as our electrics are bad here as in old not been looked at since the 60's!)

Next year I might clear the garage out as I feel they need to be more sheltered. Id like an indoor (shed/garage) floor space for Leo bunny to have as a run in the days.

I bring the guineas into the kitchen for morning/evening cuddles as not got heating in there - hutches are so close to the back door - if wet I just bring them in under my waterproof coat.

Do hate the clocks changing and dark evenings as Mon - Fri I'm out 7.45 - 5.30 but my Mums about in the day to check on them.

I do worry about Leo bunny each winter as hes 12 now but always appears to be one very hardy bunny - his hutch has covers too.

I wish I had more space inside and out and could have a shed (am working on that idea) Ive had guineas for 30 years now since I was 6 and they have always been kept outside, with covers on the hutches over winter months.

At the mo dont feel I will get anymore piggys in the future until Ive got a shed for winter months.
