Hello there, we are suddenly having an issue with our group dynamic. We have 4, a neutered male 6 years old, a rescue adult female unknown age but with us for 2 years, 1 rescue female 18 months and another rescue female 8 months.
The 2 youngest are newer to us and have been with us for 6 months. The bonding was done quite slowly and carefully but went fine, and all have lived happily as a group for the most part. There have been occasional grumpy days with the male and older female trying to establish dominance, but it is short lived.

Today the male is constantly chasing the females, the 18 month old particularly, getting on their backs and behaving aggressively. He is humping the 18 month old and pulling on her fur to stop her running away, which she is obviously very unhappy about and is squealing.

The male has a long standing issue with his teeth growing down into his gums (managed with long term pain relief when required and monitored by a specialist vet). Usually if he is grouchy, we assume he is in pain and give him pain killers and that fixes the issue, but nothing is deterring him.

We've separated him from all the females for short periods and this hasn't worked so we've separated them for the night to see if this helps.

Can anyone shed any light in the sudden behaviour change? He is usually a very placid calm character.

Could it be they are in season by any chance? They come into season around every 15-17 days. Are they allowing themselves to be mounted and humped? Do be careful about separating as doing so repeatedly can cause issues.

They are allowing him (mostly), but he just keeps doing it constantly and they seem to get annoyed and kick him or run away, which seems to stress him out and makes it worse. We've only separated after about 8 hours because the 18 month old seems so stressed

It could be that the girls are in season but If this is out of character for him, then a vet check would be in order. Any sudden change of behaviour then it is always wise to look at any medical angle first. I would also switch to daily weight checks so you can more closely monitor his hay intake.

i hope he is ok

Thanks for the advice. The youngest girl has managed to push her way into the enclosure with him, and they're fine, so it's just the 18 month old he's seemingly having issues with. I wonder if that does indicate that she's in season
