I’ve had to take my five year old guinea pig Teddy to the vet as his bone growth in his eye has gotten worse, he was confirmed blind in both eyes last may. His eye has become inflamed and he’s in discomfort. The vet checked the pressure of his eye and it’s still in a safe zone and doesn’t have glaucoma. They have given him metacam, antibiotic eyedrops and normal eyedrops to see if the inflammation comes down. They said they will probably have to remove both eyes at some point as the bone growth keeps getting worse and it’s starting in the other eye too. I’m just a bit confused cause I thought this condition was painless and I didn’t think his eyes would need removed but it’s advanced so quickly :( does anyone have experience with this condition in advanced cases ?

Hi

Not sure what is exactly going on and whether the metaplasia is incidental or causing the inflammation because this is the frankly first case of this I am coming across. But I am very sorry.

Once you get these secondary inflammatory or infectious eye problems, it sadly becomes rather difficult to treat. I have had them in connection with advanced cataracts and once glaucoma inside the eyeball.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that you and your vet can get on top of it!

Thankyou, it’s so awful that it’s happening, if the medications don’t work they can remove the eyes but they also said euthanasia as it’s a high risk surgery especially cause he’s older and it’s a lot of money so I honestly don’t know what to do :(

I am keeping my fingers crossed. Eye removal in older piggies is much more risky as you have to push on the eyeball to remove it which does put pressure on the heart for a moment.

Sadly, I lost my Hafina during her op. Her age unknown as found dumped in cardboard box on somebody's doorstep, but deemed 'mature' with a long term untreated eye infection and blocked tear ducct. Her heart gave out during the op after she developed glaucoma following a walled-in infection inside her eyeball, making removal necessary.
Younger Meleri's eye removal (result from a cataract leaking protein and causing an infection inside the eye) went without a hitch in comparison. :(

That is as close as I can come with my own experiences. I don't envy you the decision. It's not something you ever make easily or without trepidation.

You can sadly never choose what your piggies come down with and there is a lot more weird stuff around than you'd imagine. I call it the cosmic lottery of random short straws. :(

Yeah so true :( I’ve tried so hard to prevent illnesses and conditions in my pigs but this is one that is down to genetics :( my other guinea pig Bambi has sterile cystitis but he’s been clear for over a year but I’m so careful with their diets
