I think my four year old pig (five at the end of May), Pat, might have this on both eyes. I noticed it recently while holding him at the vets. When I mentioned it to my vet he said to just keep an eye on it but didn’t mention what it might be (we were there for something else). I had heard of it but didn’t realise that’s what it looked like until today.

I’m wondering, if this is the case, what is it like long term? Is it painful? Will it affect his sight? He is a very healthy pig so I would hope that he has at least 2-3 more years ahead of him and I’m wondering if it will progress in that time?

I can get some pictures later today.

Osseous metaplasia is a white ring which forms around the eye.
Osseous choristoma is a white spot which forms in the eye.

Both are the same thing - bony formation within the eye.
It’s not painful for them but can limit their eyesight. However, sight is not their strongest sense at all so they are unbothered by the condition and will continue to live quite normally and happily.

Thank you!

Glad it’s nothing serious. I’ll just keep an eye on it as with anything else.
