What is considered a good healthy weight for an adult piggie? Have been reading SO much about piggie care in the last week and have been wondering if their teeth are too long and need trimming. One of the sites I looked this up on said that the best thing any cavy owner can do is weigh their piggies weekly which we have never done.

So we weighed them today. One was approx 960g and the other (who has always been smaller) was around 800g. Does that sound a healthy weight?

Thanks.

This varies from gp to gp,as with humans piggies can vary very much in size and weight. An adult sow should be around 2lb 6 ozs and a boar around 2lb 10ozs.Some sows and boars can get much bigger.I have 2 boars who are over 3lb and at the other end of the scale I have gps who are just around the 2lb mark and are just as healthy.

It is a good idea to weigh your gps on a regular basis because if they are losing weight gradually over a few weeks this indicates a health problem,.Possibly a digestive problem or a renal problem. If there is a heavy loss in one week,it could be a dental or mouth problem, possibly an ulcer.
