Hi everyone,

My daughter (10) is getting 2 Guinea pigs for her birthday in 5 weeks (she's wanted a pet for years!) ... so it's down to me to plan everything, including the piggies home. I've been reading up and a 5ftx 2ft C&C cage sounds great - except that when we go on holiday the piggies will need to go and live in another house for 1 to 2 weeks (most likely my parents), at least twice a year. So .. C&C isn't really an option as a 2x5ft bit of Correx isn't going to be too easy to transport 30 miles to their house. Even if I can get it in the car without damaging it, I'll need a separate cage to transport the guinea pigs.

So ... I've seen the MidWest Habitat cage (2x4ft) which I think is the minimum that we should really do for 2 guinea pigs, and I'd like to give them more space if I can. I like the way you can buy 2 of these and link them together - but we just don't have the floorspace for 2 of them in any configuration (side by side, L shaped or end to end).

So here's what I'm thinking : Get a Widest Guinea Habitat (Guinea Pig Cages – Next Day Delivery Guinea Pig Cages) which would be their main "play" area, and put a small 60 or 80cm cage side on at the narrow (2ft) end of the Habitat cage as their feeding/hay area. I'd need a cage with an opening on it's long side as this is what would be linked/lined up against the habitat opening.

So ... in the image (attachment below) ... the green area would be the habitat "play area", the back area the 60/80cm cage (for feeding), and the red area the ramp between the two. Drawing not to scale!

Obviously what I then need is a small 60/80cm cage with an opening along it's "long" side so that it lines up with the opening at the end of the Habitat cage. Perhaps something like this: Little Friends Cavie 60 Guinea Pig Cage

An additional bonus of this approach is that the 60/80cm cage can be used as transport for the piggies when needed.

So ... before I proceed down this route ... can anyone see any fatal flaws in my plans?

Thanks,
Zed

Looks ok to me as you are intending for the small add on 60x80 cage to be used as a hay pit and feed area. The 60x80 has the adaptability to be used as a 'temporary' holliday home.

I have a 60 x 80 cage it really is very small and I wouldn't be comfortable with them spending any great deal of time in it. I use mine as a hospital cage if someone is poorly. I know the pig's aren't going to live in it and it's only for transport.

Do be careful with ramps as a lot of piggies can't get to grips with them.

Some store bought cages go up to 150 cm which is bigger than your average cage and would be easy to transport to. It's more floor space as there isn't a ramp. You could then get a fold away run for floor time at home?
