Afternoon everyone,

Today is dedicated to disinfecting virtually every pig-related thing I own. Little Machu appears to be in perfect health, was checked by a vet 3.5 weeks ago, and I've been advised by 2 separate vets that he is incredibly unlikely to have contracted the inner ear infection that took our Picchu.

However, after some advice by the members here, he's being closely watched for another week or two before being checked out again and getting his boar-dating MOT. :D But these have been my first piggies and after seeing how quickly his cage mate declined, I'm erring on the side of caution (read: paranoia) and making sure everything is now disinfected thoroughly before it comes back into contact with Machu.

The travel carrier Picchu lived it while he was treated, and their main cage surfaces, are being disinfected with a vinegar and lemon juice dilute. Any towels he's been held or wrapped in, or lain on, have been bleached (before anyone freaks out at my use of the B-word, they were soaked in a boiling dilute, then they're being hand-rinsed, rinsed in plain boiling water, hand rinsed again, and put in a normal non-bio detergent wash before they come anywhere near my remaining pig), and as I'm only now preparing for a move to fleece there are no soft surfaces in their cage that I need to be concerned about.

Is this enough? Is there anything else I should do?

Barely related and probably silly question while I've got you all: Picchu's oral Baytril prescription was never opened. What do I do with it? Does it all need just pouring away, or is it safe to keep in case of emergency (ie, Machu starts showing similar symptoms at 2am on a Sunday) -- not that I'm advocating non-vet advice, I just don't want it to go to waste. I think this is probably one of those obvious things that I've got grief-induced brain-block over.

*bump*

It sounds like enough to me, but I have never been in your position, sorry,

As for the baytril. Honestly? I 'd keep it, especially if you cannot get to the emergency vets at 2am in the morning. Even as a kind of security blanket!

It is a basic antibiotic and the go to drug for most vets for most small furries, in reality you would probably beable to get your guinea pig to the vets before you'd need to use it. But I am a just in case kinda girl!

Great for the blankets/fleece etc. However for the cage I'm afraid natural products won;t cut the mustard as Ear infections can be caused by some very nasty multi-drug resistant bugs (My Maple has one at the moment).

A proprietry vet disinfectant would be best such as Trigene or Virkon which can be bought over the ineternet...(NOT F10 in this situation) ....or bleach. You need to allow a contact time of about 10mins minimum, then rinse throughly with water. If it is a wooden hutch as opposed to palstic cage then scrub the wood with a scrubbing brush and make sure you get into the corners with a toothbrush. Then thoroughly rinse (spray a hose on it), remove as much water as possible and leave to dry.

Unopened baytril can be kept in the fridge. If you have a good relationship with your vet you should be able to ring them in an emergency and get them to agree over the phone to it being given until an appointment is available...the sooner an antibiotic is given (particularly with URI's) the better chance of a full recovery...especially useful over long bank holidays.

Thanks. I just figured bleach on his usual surfaces was a mortal sin, but I definitely want to kill this horrible bug! I'll order some Trigene for future use and get him in his playpen today while we bleach...I'll just rinse everything really really really well!
