I've recently posted about Maggie, a rescue sow, I've just noticed she has scratched one of the scabs off. There is no blood it's just 'open'. Is there anything I can put on it to prevent infection until I can get to see the vet. Typical it has to happen on a saturday.

Dilute hibiscrub (chlorhexidine gluconate) is the best thing for cleaning wounds (some people follow it up with purple spray), you can get it from boots or from your vet. It may be simplest though just to use a saline solution to keep it clean until you get to the vets, it'll probably heal over pretty quickly anyway.

I think that you should be a bit careful not to irritate it further though so I wouldn't put too much of anything on it. Very dilute salt water would be least risky I would say & would keep it clean. Personally I would leave it alone until seeing the vet.

Hope she'll be ok, poor girl xx

I had to take Lulu back to the vet yesterday as she had managed to pull all her stitches out creating an open wound. The vet said not to use hibiscrub as it would irritate any tissue. She said use saline solution to bath the wound. In the time it took us to get her in to the vets for the vet to glue it back together (we decided stitches wouldn't work as she would just eat them again), Lulu had grown a scab over the wound. The vet also said to give her pain relief as it was sore. Hope this helps

I've been out for a few hours and just come back and checked her over. The wound has dried nicely and I can see no 'wet'spots. Thanks for the advice x

If you have any micro pore tape, pop some over her back feet over the nails too prevent her from scratching it again until it has healed over.
