I went to p@h yesterday to pick up some timothy hay for my girls. I really shouldn't have looked but they had 2 big beautiful quiet boys in their adoption section. Other than the ethics of p&h and the fact the staff are particularly dopey in this store, do you think it would b possible that IF (very big if) i rehomed them they would be ok to live seperately from my girls and not fight or would they be better if they had been neutered?
wouldn't consider them but i fell in love

Nuetuering makes no difference to beahviour they are still horny beggers, trust me i have one lol!

If they will be able to see and smell the girls chances are they will most probably fight, even if they are nowhere near the girls they could end up fighting anyway nuetered or not, boars pairs sometimes work, groups very rarely work.

Nuetering is only really a last resort proceedure as it does carry many risks, but if you do rehome them be prepared incase you have to separate them by means of separate cages or a divide in the one cage, as far as boar pairs go the much space they have the better so C&C grids to make a huge enclosure would be your best bet.

Thank you. I thought that might be the case. They seem fine with eachother as a pair but the shop isn't exactly a normal environment. I'm sure they wont be there long before stealing someones heart. I'll try and work on my sister :)

As there are two rescues here in South Wales that can guarantee that any pigs for adoption are healthy, sexed correctly and not pregnant I would ask that if you or someone you know wants to have guinea pigs that they do so through the rescues.

P@H is not a rescue, most of the pigs that end up in the Adoption Centre are 'stock' that has grown too large for the baby pens, anything that shows signs of pregnany or illness. Any vet fees are taken from the adoption fees so it doesn't cost the company anything. Most have a waiver saying they have not been vet checked so no treatment has been given, they cannot guarantee the sex or pregnancy. Check on the back of the card that will probably say 'My owners couldn't take care of me anymore' as often it will translate to ex-stock in reality.

As you are new to the forum you have not been through the dozens of posts on the high number of ill, mis-sexed and pregnant pigs that have come from their stores. Sadly too many have passed away within a very short time.

There are many threads - too many to link to them all but here are just a few very recent ones.

And here's how P@H make me feel.

Yes i am aware of the issues with p@h. It was more of a pondering on my part regarding the sow/boar issue for future reference. And also with a measure if grief due to loosing an 8 week old sow on tuesday. She was not from a pet store.
Thanks for those rescue details.

Thanks so much for that info, Suzy - I am new to this site so have missed a lot of the P@H issues, and I have often seen those animals in the adoption area with "my owners couldn't keep me any more" tags on the cage and felt sorry for them, hoping that someone would give them a good home. What a twit I feel now and what an awful P@H policy - I am definitely going to buy my dry goods else where from now on!
