Well Toby has got mites and the area he was biting looks worse now even after going to the vet. There is less fur there (and seriously yesterday there was only the tiniest amount missing) I am about to totally clean out his cage and use the Mites and fleas killing spray over it too. I really am at a loss, the vet used Frontline on him and I'm terrified incase it hasn't worked:( It really pains me to think my piggy is in discomfort and pain !:0 I haven't seen any lice or creep crawlies so I'm positive it's mites. I've uploaded a pic of his sore area. Also how do you prevent this evil little buggers in the future?
Your advice will help me soo much and I would be so grateful!

Ouch that does look painful and typical of mites.

The treatment which should be used is Ivermectin my own pig when he had mites was treated with this via injection spaced over 10 days.

Is Frontline a spray? I have read it is not suitable for small animals. I would seek advice from another vet.

Yeah I've heard that too :S I might give another vets a ring for their advice. I really feel at a total loss if I can't trust the vet who can i trust?! I just want him to be better :(:( Yes I just seen this http://www.pharmaq.co.uk/shop/erol.html?gclid=CMbx4crUx5UCFRKS1QodhDG0iw#962X0 and think I might buy it

Some vets don't know a lot about exotics (which guineas are known as) I would ring up a few on Monday and see what they do for mites and if they have knowledge of pigs.

Personally I wouldn't buy medication of any kind online you don't know if it is the right medication or just water. I know people do but I prefer to get from a vet just to be on the safe side.

:)

So sorry Kerry123 to hear about Toby and your obvious distress that even after seeking treatment from a vet that Toby might still be in discomfort.

I also haven't heard of Frontline being used for guinea pigs, but that may be because I haven't had to have any of mine treated with this complaint for a long time.

However, it might just be a case of giving the treatment a few days to work. I personally would pop a little savlon, if you have it, on the sore just in case of infection, but that is just my opinion.

Is Toby still nibbling at the area?

Yeah I guess you're right I'm just really worried incase he's not gonna get what he really needs :( Maybe the frontline will work but if it gets any worse in any possible way I will go down there and raise hell lol! I've been at work all day worrying about him right now his cage is being aired out *i just sprayed that mite and flea killing stuff all over it* Do you know how to prevent them in the future?PS thank you soo much for your support!

Forgot to say that I certainly wouldn't buy anything else to give Toby at the moment. You don't want the chemicals to react against each other.

I would also be dubious about buying stuff off the internet like that as you may not be getting what you think you are and you would have to be extremely careful about getting the dosage right. But having said that, I am sure that there are good companies on the internet that advertise and sell that people use.

Thank you. I wouldn't give him anything else right now anyway as I've heard about overdosing your piggy by mistake

He's still scratching a little, aaaaaaggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhh I remember this happening when my dog caught fleas is this normal just after treatment?!?

Frontline is not really suitable for gps`s.The proper treatment is Ivermectin either in the topical forn Zeno 450 or by injection.I prefer the Zeno because the injections are painful. The Ivermectin in either form should be repeated after 10 days to kill any mites that may have hatched.

White vinigar is the best cleaner for the hutch/cage.There is no spray that will get rid of mites and as they are species specific they will not live long away from the host body.
All gp`s have mites but normally they are in such small amounts they do not cause problems, however,if the gp gets stressed for any reason or is poorly, the mites proliferate to the extent that they cause itching and iritation. There is no way to prevent this. Some gp`s are prone to mite attacks others never have a attack at all.

For the sore place get some Calendula cream. This is soothing and is a natural antibacterial.Calendula is available from health food shops and some chemists.

Thank you very much! I'm going to call another vets tomorrow to see what they can do about it. As he has just had the frontline a day ago could they put any more things on him or would it just make things worse and irriate or damage him? And I'm getting another piggy and really don't want him to pass anything onto her :)>>> :(

Yes, he'll probably scratch until the treatment kicks in x

Thanks claire. I'm going to do a little record, watch him for an hour and tally how many times he scratches then do the same the next day. I've to make a few phonecalls to other vets because I would really like a second opinion. Fingers crossed all works out well. I've seen the severe cases of mites and it's just awful, but once treated properly they end up in good health. There is just no way I would let Toby end up like that tho.

Well I was at work all day but yeah a little when I came home not as much tho I'm going to monitor him and take some notes. He's my little baby and I will stay up all night if I have to, I think he likes company at this time he's been less jumpy when I stroke him (as he is an abisyssian his hair is all crazy and he is normally very sensitive!) I'm not sure about salvon but maybe I will try it out :). Really hope he gets well soon :(
