Hi there,

My piggy had small poos and bloat before Christmas and was given emeprid, antibiotics and paracetamol. She gave the antibiotics to shift wheezing which has previously been diagnosed as allergies she said it could be but antibiotics would help anyway with the gut. The meds worked really well until New Year when they finished and I saw a regular vet as the exotic wasn’t in, he was not himself and just sat there in his cage, and his poops were small again but no bloat. The vet did an x ray and blood test all normal. She gave me metacam and emeprid, and told me to up his probiotic.

He was fine again and then two weeks later same thing small poops (not all poops), and he also had itching. I took him to the exotic vet she gave him more emeprid for the gut. She suggested a nebuliser for his chest and gave antibiotics to go in the nebuliser, she still wants to give antibiotics before we rule out any bacterial infection in the chest. And pipettes for his mites. And he only saw her Thursday and some of his poops are still small, despite being on emeprid. Urine test fine, x ray fine, poo sample fine, but his poops keep going small. He’s gained weight and always eating (he has always been a picky eater) I am calling the vet tomorrow, but has anyone advice, any experience or meds or questions I should ask the vet. She said he is likely to be on gut meds for life as bloat will always keep coming back.

Thanks for your help,

Catherine

Hi!

I would recommend that you continue to weigh him daily at the same time instead of the just normal weekly to monitor his food intake (especially hay, as you cannot judge that by eye even though it is making around 80% of what a piggy eats in a day) and supplement with recovery or mushed up pellets as an emergency measure as needed until he has recovered again.

I cannot comment on what underlying issue may be causing the diminished appetite; it is not an uncommon side effect of ongoing health issues.

Please take the time to read the guides below; you should find them very helpful and may want to bookmark them.
