Hello,
So my piggy has had a few incidents since August of having blood in his urine and has been on and off Baytril for this, he had xrays last month to rule out any bladder stones. The vets said he has a small amount of sludge in his bladder but no stones and advised to continue antibiotics for a couple more weeks, overall he had around 4 weeks worth of Baytril and has recently finished that up. Today I have noticed blood in his urine again and when weighing him he has lost another 50g so now weighs 778g which is so small for him, I am going to book him in for an appt tomorrow with the vets but just feeling totally lost with it all, has anybody experienced anything like this before? Could this be the bladder sludge causing ongoing blood episodes. Not really sure what the next steps would be with the vets, just really worried about him. Any advice or support would be appreciated, thank you.

Has your vet tested his urine to check that it is infection and not interstitial (sterile) cystitis? Or perhaps a different antibiotic is needed.
has you piggy been given metacam? That is both pain relief and an anti inflammatory and can help with bladder issues.
There are many piggies on the forum (mine included) who have or have had bladder issues. I have switched mine to grain free pellets, filter their water to reduce calcium in the water and follow the low calcium recommendations in our diet. Long Term Balanced General And Special Needs Guinea Pig Diets
I also give mine cystease which contains glucosamine.
if your little one is losing weight then have you considered stepping in with syringe feeding to help support him? Not Eating, Weight Loss And The Importance Of Syringe Feeding Fibre

Hi thank you for your reply,
He was given a three week course of trimoxazole antibiotic alongside the baytril, he still has some of this left so have been continuing with this, I have loxicom that I have been giving him daily too, however he still seems painful unfortunately, the initial vets I went to gave me some cystophan, I have given him the first capsule of this today to see if that helps, is this usually effective?
I started with some critical care last night, he hates it, is there any other types of syringe feed you would recommend? In terms of pellets I tried switching him to marriages grain free but he refused to eat it, seems to have settled on oxbow essential adult, I'm hoping this is ok, still loving his lettuce at the moment, thank you for the links with low calcium diet will check those out and hoping the get a urine sample fresh in the morning to take with me to the vets, so will get them to check if infection is still present.

Which grain free pellets do you recommend please? I’m from the uk. I followed another recommended pellet link but it was Australian. Thank you.

I feed mine Selective Naturals grain free pellets. They do also have Versele Laga cavia complete and also will eat those. We’ve had limited success with other grain free pellets.

Apologies I forgot to respond in this thread to say unfortunately my poor piggy Bob was PTS in December the vets continued investigations and decided he had gone into renal failure and there was no way back for him sadly, kindest thing to do was pts. He was such a lovely piggy and all of this came out of nowhere I still find myself wondering where it all went wrong, but his brother is coping really well without him and I am following all the guidance for veggies/pellets to hopefully avoid a repeat of what happened with poor Bob.
Thanks for the support ❤
