so i have 2 guinea pigs, nutella and gelato. i got them at PetCo (not a good idea i know, my mom and i had no idea about rodent mills at the time) and they ended up having ringworm so we had to take them right back after a few days, so i never really got to fully bond with them. when i got them back after 3 months, i noticed that gelato was the one who squeaked a lot more, but nutella was very silent. it has been since march (now almost june) since i’ve had them and i have heard very few squeaks from nutella? i’ve heard her try to let a few squeaks out, but it just sounds like a whisper, and i’m afraid her vocal chords might be damaged. :(

I am so sorry that you are experiencing this worry. I know what it feels like to be concerned about the health of a piggy. :(
That is why this forum is so amazing. :)
Please do not stress, more members will be along soon to help.

I have very quiet piggy who only occasionally says something. It's usually when there is food coming and he says a very dignified and fairly quiet "Boing Boing" while his friend goes absolutely mental wheaking loudly enough to awaken the dead! It all depends on the personality of your piggy how much they say.

Each piggie is diff.
I've had a few and really only a couple that squeak. . When they did its Brill. X

One of my piggies is very vocal, the other doesn’t talk much at all. He will chatter to the other piggy occasionally, but he never wheeks for food like the other does

I also have a piggie who you can’t hear squeak unless you put him right up to your ear. He’s being like this since we bought him. He’s fine otherwise though.
The other one makes up for him.

Piggies only make that loud wheeking noise to communicate with humans and most of the piggie to piggie communication uses body language, smells etc. so even if he does have a problem with his vocal cords it won't really affect him in the piggie world. So I presume that although being mute is a real challenge in the human world in the piggie world it really isn't the worst disability to have.

Neither of mine are very vocal. Jenny does yell when she thinks dinner is late but that’s all. Timmy has a hoarse little puff of air occasionally but never properly wheeks.

would i still have to get her checked out? does having damaged vocal chords hurt them at all?

If you’re still worried there’s no harm in taking her to the vet. If it were me I wouldn’t. One of my piggies doesn’t wheek at all. Actually I think two of them don’t wheek at all.
