Hi all,
One of my beloved piggies has just passed ;( and i am wondering whether i should get another to be with my old one.
How will they get along?
Also do they have to be the same breed ?
Thanks.

So sorry for your loss, but welcome to the forum.
Please feel free to post a tribute to your piggy on the Rainbow Pigs thread.

Is your surviving piggy male or female and how old is he/she?

Guinea pigs are social animals and need companions of their own kind.
They do grieve the loss of a cagemate but will get on with business of living so a cagemate is important to them.

There are many factors to consider, so this is my experience which might help.
My girl Merab lost her husboar when she was about 3 years old.
She was very quiet afterwards. I had already started looking for companions for her and decided on 2 baby girls. That way if they didn’t bond the new piggies would still have each other and at least they would live in the same room.
I couldn’t find a rescue near me so resorted to a pet shop about 20 miles away ( more reputable than any closer).
I was fortunate in that Merab bonded almost instantly and now 2.5 years later they still live happily together.

There are others on the forum who have lots more experience and wisdom to offer but hope this helps.

Don’t forget you are grieving too so be gentle and kind with yourself.

My piggy is a female and we are uncertain of age but she seems about 4 / 5?
Thanks for the help!

Hello, I am really sorry for the loss of your piggy.

Take time to have a read of this link here on how you can help your remaining piggy Looking After A Bereaved Guinea Pig

Pigs dont have to be the same breed to get along, often guinea pig rescues can offer piggy dating to help your piggy find a new friend. Whereabouts are you located.

Hi and welcome

I am very sorry for your loss!

If you can get in contact with a good standard rescue, they will help you to find a character compatible new mate for your bereaved girl, whether that is a sow or neutered boar. Mutual liking is much more important than an age difference, but many rescues also have got piggies that are not young.

You can find tips on what you can do for your bereaved girl in the immediate aftermath and in the longer term as well as rescue links for several countries in this guide here that should hopefully answer many of your questions and worries: Looking After A Bereaved Guinea Pig

Thank you all!
We have found a pet shop that do piggy dates !
