I’ve had 2 piggies from 5 months (brothers) very sadly one passed away 3 weeks ago...(at the age of 2)
I don’t want my remaining piggie to be lonely and I thought about getting a rescue. I live in North London and have tried to contact one in the South several times but they do not respond...
I’ve been given so many different opinions on whether to get another male or female...young ok, not ok...
I’d just like some advice please.... cos all the time I’m trying to find out, poor Denzil may be very lonely 😞

I’m so sorry for your loss. Well done on thinking about Denzil. I would stretch your search a little further. Email all the rescues on the list within reach and see what they say. They don’t tend to list single piggies on their websites.

With regards what suits him, it’s about character compatibility rather than age. You can’t get a sow unless he’s been neutered. Yes he may bond with a young boar but a young boar will eventually go into his teenage months. And that could bring problems so you can’t know.

Below is the link to the recommended rescues. It’s almost Christmas but fingers crossed there will be a suitable boar for you.

thank you for your reply 😊 I was thinking whether I would need to get him neutered so I could maybe get a sow as companion. I then got told that some vets won’t do that as they don’t do well under anaesthetic?! I'm not in any hurry and want to find the best way to get him a new housemate but options seem to be so varied 🤔

If the vet is experienced then they can do well. But as with all surgery there is a risk.

I’m sorry for your loss.

I agree in that with a good, experienced vet, the neutering risks are minimal - never zero, but the overall
health of your piggy and experience of the great make things safer.

don’t forget that if you do neuter him, he will need to be kept away from sows for six weeks after surgery to become infertile.

regardless of whether you find him a boar friend or neuter/wait and get a sow, character compatibility is still the most vital part, so finding a rescue is safest as you can be assured of a good bond if your piggy can choose his own friend. I’d you were to get a piggy without dating then you need a plan B of them living separately but in side by side cages in case of failed bonding

I’m so sorry you lost Denzil’s brother, I hope you can find a little friend for him soon x
