Hi all!

Just a quick question: has anyone ever seen an older sow suddenly become very 'frisky' when she comes into heat?

I have three un-neutered females, Lola is three and Marilyn and Rosie are just gone a year old. Normally I have no problems when they come into heat, a little rumbling and fussing but nothing to worry about. Last time Lola came into heat though, she went crazy humping the two younger ones. She's never done that before and they've been cage-mates a year now.

No harm was done, bar the younger ones being annoyed, I just thought it was puzzling. Only lasted for a day as well.

Could it be her hormones changing a bit cause she's older?

Hi!

Please have your sow checked for ovarian cysts; they are rather common in older sows.
You can find information on ovarian cysts and possible treatment options in this guide here: Sows: Behaviour and female health problems (including ovarian cysts)

I think sudden friskiness in older ladies can possibly indicate ovarian cysts... probably best to get her vet checked and mention this to them, just in case!

Oh dear.... I hope not!

She has a number of cysts under her skin, she's had them a while but they're causing no bother... could that be a symptom as well?

2 of my girls have been spayed for ovarian cysts - one was about 3.5 years at the time.
Your piggy's symptoms are very common with cysts.
A vet check will give a proper diagnosis.

Hope all turns out well.
Please keep us posted
