Before I got my piggies, I did sooooo much research on them and their needs but nothing could’ve prepared me for how mortified I was after the vets this afternoon 😅

I took Harry to the vets because he’s decided he wants to constantly lay down (he’s totally fine, he’s just lazy 🙈)

I then saw a post on here yesterday where someone mentioned that their piggies smell like fish and everyone said that it wasn’t normal so I took Mo in as well because I’m always smelling fish..

WHO WAS GONNA TELL ME ABOUT THE POUCH AND HOW BAD IT WOULD SMELL AND HOW I NEED TO CLEAN IT 😭😭😭

I was mortified to say the least and now I’m absolutely gonna be cleaning it often 😩

.. also, what’s the best brand of hay to get for my piggies? I usually get the meadow jay from pets at home but there’s huge clumps of mud in it 😡

😂😂 oh gosh! At least you know now… they also have two nipples and some have a belly button something I ended up googling not long after I got my boys!

I buy my hay from www.timothyhay.co.uk my boys get orchard hay as I’m allergic to Timothy hay and it’s amazing quality 8kg lasts us (2 pigs) 7/8 weeks.
Here it is..

So if you’ve got older piggies who are prone to impaction then yes you may need to clean it, but youngsters may never need to be done. If you are noticing bad smells though, then there is obviously something not right.

Boar Care: Bits, Bums & Baths

Any grass hay is absolutely fine. Mine get fed a mixture of timothy from Haybox and meadow hay which I buy in a bale from a local farm.

Guinea pigs can collect all sorts in their anal sack, hay and hair etc. from scent marking around a new cage for example.
Boars can be stinky but generally speaking they shouldn't be really fishy smelling, is this a smell that comes around after a particularly dominant moment of hussle and bussle? Boars have a somewhat boar-y smell in general and it can get real bad in a time of shared dominance.

I feed the timothy and meadow hay mix from pets at home and my boys love it. Many will get from local farm shops as you can buy in bulk for cheaper but I personally do not have any decent farm shops near me so this is the next best I have found.
Mud is not unknown of being found in hay as it is just taken up from the ground, you may find loads of different bits in hay, sort of depends where you get it from just be careful when putting hay in the cage for any foreign objects.

I know this smell well 🤢. I used to have an old boar that had impaction and needed cleaning every day. It is the worst smell EVER.
