I went to give my guinea pigs their veggies this morning - no wheeking - no begging . They wouldn't come out of their hideys .

I've given them a quick check over and they all look OK - but, judging by the poos , I'd say they've been in the same hidey all night .

I don't know what is wrong and I'me very concerned .

Has anyone got any advice ?

I had this same thing happen a few months back with Coco, she was very quiet and unusually inactive and just wouldn't come out of her hidey even to eat but she was eating fine I just had to give her food in a pile outside her hidey. This went on for a couple of days and then she was back to popcorning all over the cage again and chasing her sister so I thought maybe she was having some weird anti social season or something but I was freaking out of course. Maybe they got a bit of a fright and are just nervous to come out.

Sometimes my piggies will stay in the hides.... Maybe they are just tired? They could just be scared... Piggies get scared easily. Maybe something frightened them? You could get there favourite food in the whole world, they would like that!

Thanks for the replies.

@PiggySlave<3 - to answer your 1st question , I have 2 pairs - one pair is an elderly sow ( Bess) and daughter Sparkle. Sparkle will be 4 this November and this pair have lived with me for 3 years . My other pair is a neutered boar and sow who are both rescues so I don't know how old they are . They have lived here for just over a year now .

To answer you both - I agree the most likely thing is that something has spooked them - but I can't work out what as I was around all yesterday and didn't see or hear anything .

Bess and Sparkle were booked in for a date tomorrow ( to meet one or 2 of the BARC boars ). I suspect it would be prudent to postpone this :(

They are so easily scared aren't they often by something so small to us but must seem so frightening to a creature so small.

Is your housing rodent proof Lisa, l once had a similar experience and it turned out we had a visiting rat. They tend to be active during the night, just being in the shed would freak piggies out even if they can't get to them

I am as sure as I can be that no rodents have been in their shed.

Well, I'm pleased to say I was wheeked at when I took them their supper tonight - they still seem a bit subdued - but nowhere near as bad as this morning .

I wish they could tell me what was wrong .

I'm suspecting something happened when they were having grass time yesterday evening .

I'm glad normal wheeking service has resumed. I would suspect something had spooked them. Any big spiders or a bat in your shed?

I would suggest a vistor prey animals have been about...dogs,cats,foxes, bigger birds.e.g. magpies...mice.I am glad your piggies resuming normal behaviour.

I agree with the others.
Not quite the same, but I have noticed our rabbits (who live outside in a very secure enclosure) sometimes behave like this.
Normally they bound to the front of their run when we call them, but once or twice they have stayed huddled at the back.
A couple of weeks ago I saw a large cat wander through our garden - it didn't show any interest in the rabbits, but it did walk past their run.
I went out to scare the cat off and check the rabbits, and they were both huddled at the back of their hutch.
I know for certain that the cat didn't do anything, but clearly they knew it was around and perceived it as a threat.

I bet you are relieved that the piggies have started their wheeking up again. Hopefully they will be back to their normal selves in no time.

All okay today? Something must have had them spooked out
