Hello all!

I recently acquired a little baby boar (Truffle). We've had him for about a week now.
We already have an adult boar (Biscuit) who's almost 1 year old.

Now Biscuit has been acting odd. Currently Truffle is in a cage in the kitchen and Biscuit is housed in a 'penthouse' on top of the rabbits in the living room.
When I first let Biscuit have a look and sniff of Truffle, he pretty much screamed in his face... head back and REALLY loud wheaking constantly but no teeth chattering.
We let him have another look and sniff couple days later and he was a bit calmer. Just lots of rumbling/purring, wheaping and excitable sniffing with attempts to have a nibble/nip.

That's not all though. When they're in their different houses. Biscuit is on constant watch for any sights or sounds. If he hears him or smells him. He starts wheaking really loudly and chewing the bars. Almost as if I'm preparing veggies for him. He'll stop and go have a mumble to himself, then he'll start again.

So I'm really confused what's going on. Is he excited about this baby? Or is he being aggressive? There's been no teeth chattering at all...apart from at me if I don't do what he wants.

Sorry for going on! Any input is much appreciated!

xx

I am no expert but if he is acting the same as he does at tea time, maybe he is excited to see him. Put them in a neutral place to get to know each other for a short while and keep a close eye on them. :)

Thanks for responding! :) I'll have a read of those posts.

My other half thinks he's excited because he thinks Truffle is a girl.
But he is 100% male!

Piggies are social animals and crave company.

Even boys hump each other (not particularly from the proper end) - it's part of their "getting to know each other and sorting out the dominance question" behaviour.

I have a new question! One which I couldn't quite find the answer for.

We had our first meeting today! All went well, usual dominating behaviour.
But Biscuit kept lifting his leg and squirting something on Truffle. Is this bad or is it normal?
He also kept wriggling round the floor, I assume territory marking. He was quite the stinky piggy.

Will this all settle down? Or will we have a stinky piggy for good now?

Also when is the best time to move them in together?

Sorry for all the questions. I'm really new to bonding male piggies.

Boys are very busy marking territory and squirting pee does the same. Boys' pee can be VERY smelly, as it contains testosterone. It will get better when they have settled. First meetings can very hormonal and guinea pigs can go overboard quite easily.

Please leave them together when you put them together next time, as you are forcing them to a repeat of the whole show all over again.

In order to build up a working relationship they need to be able to stay together. The first few hours are critical. Put them in their cage after a couple to several hours onwards (if necessary a full day, if one of the boys is very territorial). You can do it once they have calmed down and are looking like they are getting on with each other.

At the moment we have a bit sectioned off in Biscuit's house. After their first meeting and enough floor time together (Biscuit ended up falling asleep). We immediately put Truffle in the other section. It's made out of grids so they can see each other really well. Just not get to each other.
