Our piggie Carlo recently had dental surgery and lost some weight because the problems his teeth were causing him. The vets advised us to keep an eye on his weight (which we have been) and not to be concerned as long as he’s maintaining but she’d ideally like to see him gain a bit back. I saw plain oats were a good way of helping them gain weight so i’ve bought some but i’m unsure of how much/how often I should be giving them to him?

Have you been syringe feeding him recovery food as well? That’s the first port of call rather than going straight to oats. It will take a while for him to regain the weight. Syringe feeding will help him.

Yeah the vets gave us some recovery formula when he wasn’t doing so well after surgery and he had it every 2-3 hours round the clock for a few days but then started refusing it when he went back to eating his regular pellets/veg and hay

If he’s back to eating it’s good. But if he’s still losing then he’s not eating enough. Perhaps try 5ml every 2 hours rather than a larger amount. You could try offering it to him on a spoon or on a bowl.

If you want to support feed oats, please put a few out in a bowl but please don't overdo it in a piggy that is eating normally and is holding their weight as it is the silica in grass and hay is what grinds down the crucial molars and premolars; overdoing the support feed can result in a piggy eating less grass and hay.

If you have access to fresh growing dog pee free grass, then that is a good source of rich natural food high in vitamin C. Your piggy's guts needs to be gradually accustomed to it if they are not yet used to or you risk diarrhea or bloat.
