When we first had the piggies we got ordinary hay, after that ran out we got straw, this straw apparently now has Hay Lice/Mites.
When we got the straw it was all they had so thats why we got it!
Does anyone know any good bedding we could use?
I do not want to use fleece, or wood shavings, I have heard bad reports about it... skin irritations, sneezing, etc.
I'll ask mum if we can go down to the shops and see if they are selling the first hay we got!
Hopefully the mites/lice will be easily treated with Small Animal Insecticidal Mite and Mange Spray.

Thank you.

Julia.

Can you get dried flax in Australia? It's a bit like wood shavings but isn't bad for them! You should probably avoid straw anyway because it's quite sharp and your piggies can easily poke themselves in the eye. I get bales of flax from my local countryside/equine supplier .

I've just realised you can see The Luggage posing with her ball on some flax to the left!

Have a look for shredded/chopped cardboard bedding - it's most likely to be sold as horse bedding.

Your guinea pigs will still need plenty of hay to eat as it should make up about 80% of their diet.

:)

I use this for my hamsters but i'd not use it for pigs as it gets very wet & soggy in their toilet areas quite quickly. :)

We bought some new hay : Pasture Hay
we put newspaper, then recycled paper kitty litter then hay, it is VERY absorbent
