Not recovering from bladder stone surgery

Hi everyone,

I posted recently our turmoil on if we should take our boy for bladder surgery or not, having discovered he had stones about 3 weeks ago. Unfortunately he became quite obviously poorly on Monday, (he was managing happily with meds until then) and we ended up taking him for an emergency surgery the same day. He came home yesterday evening, after the vets had said he had seemed “perky” and was nibbling veg so was fine to come home. However, since we’ve had him all he wants to do is sleep, with obviously little energy to eat or do anything for himself. He’s still got laboured breathing, and has lost some weight so we are syringe feeding him every hour/two hours.
It’s been nearly 48 hours now and he’s not moved out of his cosy unless he’s readjusting or hiding himself. No interest in food or water, and being with his cage mate hasn’t perked him up either.
We think the vets maybe didn’t feed him enough and he’s possibly in GI stasis (if he has now suddenly stopped eating if the vets were correct and he’d been eating on his own accord), or my other thinking is reading some posts about the effects of buprenorphine post-op (we don’t have confirmation he has had this, but seems possible)? We’re really worried about him, and obviously are trying our best to get him perkier, but even syringe feeding him he’ll just hold the food in his mouth and doesn’t even seem to have the energy to swallow it ☹️
Has anyone had similar experience or know at what point we should seek intervention? Any tips or tricks? Anything at all?

I would definitely be seeking vet advice now.

It can take a while for the anaesthetic effects to wear off, however, that should have happened by now.
The vet can tell you if he was given buprenorphine. But if he hasn’t had any more since you brought him home he should hopefully be getting over any he was given on Monday.

What pain relief have you been given to give him at home?
Are you weighing him daily?

Hello. I’m so sorry your piggy is not well. My Percy had bladder stone surgery last August. The morning after his op the vet nurse called to check on him. I told her he wasn’t moving around yet and she said he definitely should be moving around by that afternoon. If not I was to call them. My boy didn’t make it I’m afraid. So if I was you I’d get him back to the vets for a check up. Just to be on the safe side. I really hope he’s ok. Good luck.

Here’s Percy’s thread if you’d like to read.

Percy’s turn 😢

I am very sorry that your boy isn’t recovering as he should 😞 My Ella was given Buprenorphine for her recent incisor removal, was even given some to bring home to give her every 8 hours and apart from being a bit spaced out for the first 24 hours post surgery, she was absolutely fine. Granted, she didn’t eat but that was due to mouth pain from having her incisor removed. She wanted to eat though.

Whatever anaesthetic drugs were used should have worn off by now. I would definitely give the vet a call x

Thanks for the comments and replies everyone. We have taken him back to the vet for a check over, who’ve said that his gut is still moving (but slow); he’s lost a bit of weight but not significant (0.96 to 0.93kg); no heart or lung issues, no infections and no obvious reason for concern (said lightly as we obviously are concerned still). She thinks he’s just in pain and has given him some more, higher-strength painkillers via injection (😣) to help him. Since he’s been back his wheezing/laboured breathing has calmed (it’s still rapid but not wheezy anymore), and he’s seeming a bit more settled. We’re hoping this will help him through the worst of it and we can get him eating a bit more easily to prevent any stasis. He’s got another appointment tomorrow for a follow up too! Thank you all for the support x

I am glad the vet has given him a higher dose of pain meds, that should at least keep him more comfortable until your appointment tomorrow. It’s so horrible when they’re in pain 😞 x

Fingers crossed he feels better soon.

As he has had an injection and he is back to the vet tomorrow, I’m going to assume not, but have they given you/said they will give you any pain killers to give him at home?
I’m surprised he wasn’t discharged on Monday with metacam for you to give him at home?

I’m pleased the vets are not too worried. Good luck tomorrow.

We were given metacam, gabapentin, and antibiotics, which we have been continuing to give him but didn’t seem to be doing much (maybe because he’s a stubborn pig with a hatred for syringes so wouldn’t take it easy). Now, however he’s so lethargic from the painkillers he’s not swallowing so we’re worrying he won’t be able to (and maybe shouldn’t given how zonked he is!), take any more and could be back at square one☹️. The worry is the vet has given him Buprenorphine and it’s causing him to be too lethargic. We will be following up at the vet about this tomorrow
