My senior piggy Hugo no longer seems too interested in his veggies. He’s still munching on romaine and carrots, but that seems to be all he wants in the veggie department. He seems more interested in eating hay than anything else.

Should I be concerned or is it normal?

If he is still eating hay then I personally wouldn’t be too concerned. You can keep an eye out for any behavioural changes and perhaps switch to daily weighing for a while to make sure there is nothing else going on, but as I said I wouldn’t be too concerned as he is still eating his hay.

Have you tried him with herbs, my boys can’t resist a herb even when they were ill. As for carrots, they should only be fed once or twice a week as they have a high sugar content.

My only worry would be the nutritional value vegetables add to the diet, but off the top of my head if he was still eating his hay and getting his 1tbsp of pellets a day plus his romaine lettuce, this shouldn’t pose too much of an issue. Perhaps if this continues for say a couple weeks you could give your vet a phone and ask them if they think this would pose any issue for your boy, as they will certainly have a better understanding of nutritional values than me.

:agr:

Switch to daily weight checks to ensure he definitely is still eating enough hay. That is the main food intake and is often the first thing to be dropped when a health issue occurs.

There is never any harm in having any concerns checked by a vet though, and a change in behaviour such as this can be wise to get checked

Thank you! I’ve tried numerous different herbs, but Hugo just isn’t a fan of any of them. None of my piggies are, for some reason. I gave him back the spring mix from dinner, and he decided to eat most of it. I tend to get overly anxious over them.
He also went to the vet last Thursday, and they said he appeared healthy other than arthritis, which he got medicine for.

I struggle with anxiety too and certainly surrounding my pigs, so I get what you mean.
If a medical issue has been ruled out, and you switch to daily weighing for a while just to keep an eye on things then hopefully all will be well x
