Hi everyone!
I need your help! I recently got two guinea pigs from a breeder, have had them about a week. Since getting the piggies one of them has developed dry scabby skin (not red or oozing) and hair loss on her rump which she doesnt like to have touched. i have Taken her to vet and she has been tested for mites and fungal and both tests came back negative. She is in perfect health apart from this skin issue.

What else could this be? Please help me as I am a new owner and have not much knowledge!

Has the vet not given any ideas as to what it could be? Possibly horomone related or ovarian cysts? Ect?
Are you having more tests done?

Hello and :wel: to our friendly Forum. Does your vet have a good knowledge of guinea pigs? Not all of them do. Guinea pigs are "exotic animals" believe it or not. Have a look at the vet locator above to see if there is a vet near you. Where are you based? @Freela, @Wiebke, @Jaycey, @Pound Shilling & Pig

Mites often don't show on a skin scaping, so a negative test doesn't necessarily indicate that the piggy is mite-free.

One of my piggies has a skin condition of some kind - his skin becomes dry, flaky and itchy, and it always happens in the spring and autumn. We're completely certain that it's not mites/fungus, because he's been tested and treated multiple times, and because the condition presents every year. He's treated with antihistamine injections and a topical calming spray. This spring we caught it early and it went away in less than 3 days.

Hi! Please be aware that labs will test only for ringworm, but not other forms of fungal infection, of which there are quite a number. They are also not necessarily conclusive. How is your vet treating the skin and hair loss?

Can you please post a picture of the affected area and where it is on the body?

Mites and fungal would still be the two top candidates... and sometimes mites don't show well on tests. Some fungal tests are also very specific and will only show one particular kind of fungus (i.e. ringworm) while not correctly diagnosing others.

Hi everyone, thank you for your replies. I have attached some photos of the patches, the red scab is new and is very sore because poor Daisy squeaks and vibrates like crazy even if i just part her hair. The Vet gave me some mote treatment to try and she has had two pippettes of XENO a week ago and still these patches are spreading

Poor girl she looks so uncomfortable. Hope you can find out the cause if the Xeno doesn't do it.

A bacterial skin infection is also a possible but unlikely cause. It would need treating with an antibacterial shampoo such as Malaseb, available as prescription only from your vets and should not be used in conjunction with other treatments.
